all you need to do is visit your local dvla office and they will sort it all out for you on the spot, my local one is in borehamwood , take your entitlement letter and your new keeper suppliment, along with mot cert and insurance cert

Have they changed the rules? Do you not need the DLA404 to get the tax disc any more? If the letter of entitlement is sufficient that makes it a lot easier. Direct.gov still refers to the DLA404 or certificate of entitlement.

Maybe if you go directly to them then they give it to you there?

The DVLA doesn't issue the DLA404 and their guide still refers to needing it. I'm still digging though... LOL

    Dug!

My DLA404 expired last year (car taxed on the last day LOL) so I needed to get a new one anyway so I rang up. The system HAS changed. The certificate now only lasts for 12 months (used to expire with award) and a new certificate is automatically issued 2 months before the tax disc expires (as long as you're still in receipt of HRM).

It's a bit confusing because direct.gov appear to imply that certificates will be sent out automatically if you're in receipt of HRM but it isn't, you still have to request the certificate, the 'automatic' only refers to if you request it prior to receiving a decision on your claim or are already in receipt of the new style certificate.

  • The local DVLA will do it painlessly and quickly based on the 404.

You must have the 404 or the DVLC [ local or otherwise ] won't be able to reference you on their system. It's the reference number that's important. They won't be able to access your details by postcode / address / name etc, only by the serial number of your award which is the top RHS of the 404 just above your NI number.

Once you have registered your car as Tax Exempt all future tax disks for that car can be done in milliseconds from your armchair via the internet.

If you change cars, you will need to go back to the local DVLA and start again with the new car registration number. you can change cars mid cycle [ example half way through a tax disk year ] by returning to the local DVLA and again you will have to produce your 404.

So the 404 is the key to everything if you are doing it yourself.

i got a form with my entitlement letter, basically i took this to my local dvla office with new keeper part and insurance, they stamp and issued a tax disc on spot, they also got me to do form to change tax class on the car.

    took all of 5 mins.

im now all sorted and in my new car, i did think about mobility but you have to have been awarded the high rate for more than 2 years i think, and i was only awarded it for 12 months which has been reviewed already and has been done fine.

but i am due another op later in the year so no doubt the award with be given again for a longer period this time.

    thanks everyone for there help

So the DVLA office could do it without the 404? That's useful to know.
