Energy Saving Light Bulbs

John Lewis are selling energy saving light bulbs for 49p in store or on line (although on line you have to pay delivery)

They have 11 watt (equivalent to a standard 60W bulb but uses 5x less electricity and lasts for around 6000 hours - that's 6 years.)

or

18 watt - equivalent to a standard 100W bulb but uses 5x less electricity and lasts for around 6000 hours - that's 6 years.

They have them in both screw and bayonet fittings. At that price I am replacing all my bulbs!

I remember reading a while ago that these kind of bulbs should not be used somewhere they will be switched off and on quite frequently like a hallway or landing.

A word of warning before you buy several boxfulls!! i think with these --- the higher the wattage the bigger the actual bulb size, so these would be too large for certain fittings i.e. closed lamps and lamps with shades etc. Which I found out to my cost:mad:

does anyone know where you can buy energy saving light bulbs which have a sensor in them, so you can put them in an outside light and they come on at dusk and go off when it is daylight again. I know there are such bulbs but do not know where to buy them.

I just moved house recently and my bills have gone up greatly. The only twi lights in house that take standard bulbs (or the cheap low energy ones) are in the hallway. Two bedrooms have dimmers (yes seen the new dimmer bulbs online) the other halogen spots. 3 spots in bathroom think its R50 the large spots. Dining room 3x60w candles (bayonet), 5x60w candles (screw) 4x halogen in kitchen. Eck getting a bit stuck on replacing the candles bulbs as there is so many different types, sizes etc.

I can't seem to find reasonably priced (less than £7) GU10 replacements that have a decent throw. I have 16 GU10 ceiling bulbs, and I could save a fortune in energy costs, but the initial outlay is beyond me while I can still pick up 2 x GU10's at pundland.

Anyone good experiences with any of GU10 low energy bulbs?
