  • Have energy-saving bulbs suddenly got a lot cheaper without me noticing? I just got some Osram 11W (equivalent to 60W conventional bulbs) bayonet bulbs at Robert Dyas and a pack of 3 was only £3.99. Weirdly, the screw-fitting bulbs were about £8 each.

These bulbs are supposed to last roughly 6 years or 6000 hours. The economic case for replacing your light bulbs is explored here: http://environment.guardian.co.uk/columnist/story/0,,2003399,00.html

Sainsburys have an offer. The lightbulbs are £2.19 each, but buy two and it is £2.99 off. Total price therefore for two is £1.39, i.e 70p each!
  • Low Emission Bulbs That Can Cope With Dimmer Switches

OK, here's my tuppence worth on the subject of low emission bulbs & dimmer switches...

Firstly, I have also experienced a problem with 'bog standard' bayonet fitting 'U' tube low emission bulbs that had been connected to the mechanical dimmer switches used in my lounge, as heralded by the 'sizzle and pop' sound I heard before each of two bulbs died after less than 4 months in situ.

However, check out the 2nd Q&A about light-dimming LES bulbs in this February 10th 2007 article by Anna Shepard in the Sunday Times:

    http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/body_and_soul/article1360052.ece

(If there are problems with that link, just go to the Times website and key in 'Megaman bulbs' into their search box.)

This recommends the Megaman DorS bulbs, which can - apparently - cope with dimmer switches.

To quote: "(megamanuk.com; £9.95 a bulb from lamps2udirect.com). These are compatible with all dimmer switches, endorsed by the Energy Saving Trust. They have a four-step dimming system, from 100 per cent to 5 per cent brightness in four easy twiddles of the knob. Each step down you save a further 20 per cent of the energy needed to power the bulb fully. What’s more, you don’t even need a dimming device on your light switch to achieve the thrills of varying levels of brightness. These bulbs work with normal light switches. To change the level, you flick it off, then on again, which the company assures me is not as energy extravagant as it sounds."

Despite the expense, I am very tempted. I note the endorsements of Megaman in earlier posts, but has anyone tried these DorS bulbs? Would be great to get your feedback. Ta!

Does anyone know if this is definately working and how long the offer is no for? Don't want to go to Sainsburys specifically and find this offer has finished...

Also, with energy saving lightbulbs, what watts should i go for bedroom, landing, lounge etc.

I saw 9W, 11W and 20W i think in Tesco, but as i want to convince my new housemates to save on our electricity bill, i don't want them to have sit in the dark with a 9W bulb as otherwise they might think they moneysaving aspect is not worth it!!
