Sony Vaio laptop from PC World broken from day 1

Bought 8 May, turned on, kept stopping/crashing, and very many times each day since. Googled and run diagnotics etc and found 'event viewer' that states the same important/serious/critical issues I'm having were happening when it was built, last November, ie I assume when they were setting it up.
I am not a very strong person with confrontation. If I take it back and say 'SOGA 1979 not fit for purpose', will I be ok. I guess they may say they will try to fix it but to be honest I don't want it any longer as I think it's just a 'rogue' laptop.
I will happily take a new replacement if I can turn it on before I leave the store and see the 'event viewer' is clear.
Will my approach work ok?

Ok most important question - did you buy it in store or online?
If online you might still get away with 7 day DSR rejection on the grounds that you ordered it on the 8th (if thats the case)
If you bought it in store thats harder - the retailer has to prove the fault was not there when you got it - given your findings in the event viewer I would ask them to look at that, as that does indicate, if they are still the same thing you have issues now with that the product has an inherant fault.
They don't have to replace it by law, but if you are calm, polite and explain the situation and all the research you have done to try to avoid returning it would likely work in your favour with getting this resolved.
Good luck.0 -
I bought in store. Thank you for taking the time.0

You have 21 days to return to store. They'll test and replace/refund if necessarySquirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

The item is brand new so the OP can reject the item and request a refund.
OP, can I suggest that you get a refund and buy from a reputable retailer like John Lewis? If they don't have the model you want in store they can usually order it in for you.Gone ... or have I?0 -
Not a problem, First off I would restore it back to factory settings, If you do this and the problem is the same/continues to happen then its defiantly a hardware fault, as unless its a in your face / obvious fault this would be the first thing the KnowHow staff ask.
Follow This and don't worry about them asking to fix it, so long as you've restored it back to factory settings (and the issue continues to happen without you adding extra software) the KnowHow staff will exchange/refund as its more effort to repair than to replace/refund.
PcWorlds returns is clearly spelled out, if faulty and within (21) days you can get a refund or replacement. Outside its a repair.0 -
Thank you sooo much - 21 days it is then. I havent even been able to make a Recovery disc, that's how messed up everything is. Can I restore to factory settings without recovery disc? I've already backed up my work so can remove it before I take laptop back.0

Aye, you can restore it back to factory settings even if Windows 7 is corrupted.
Every system comes with a recovery system (if purchased from Dixons Retail) that you can boot from.
Usually its As soon as the system starts tap F8
Select Repair Computer
(Might be prompted to enter username and password)
A menu should appear with VIAO Sony Recovery option
And follow the prompts to do a DESTRUCTIVE, factory restore.0 -
Whats the error code you are getting in event viewer? Have you had a look around the internet to see what it relates to?0

If I remember correctly, their returns policy is on the little leaflet they usually staple your receipt to?
But the first thing they would do is a system restore, so may be worth trying that yourself first. It's only after the first month I believe where they will try to repair it, you are still within the time period to request a new one, and well within your rights to set it up instore and check it over before you take it.Mummy to beautiful 5yr old girl and a gorgeous 1yr old boy:D0 -
Thank you, I am now going to try to restore to factory settings. I hope I don't need any dics to do that as none came with it. And, cus the things is so messed up I haven't even been abe to make Recovery discs.
I may be offline for a while!......0
