You need a code from the labels to know the size. If you use Word when you have the name and address on the letter, select that text and then you should find that code in a drop-down selection (Tools, Letters and Mailings, Label).
However, it is not recommended that you put the sheet of labels through the printer multiple times.
If your handwriting is legible there is no reason not to simply use manuscript for the name and address.0 -

I am actually more bothered about what is on the application than what it is in - especially since, by the time it arrives at my desk, having been through the post room and three layers of admin, I wouldn't have a clue what it arrived in0

My original reply to the OP was to acknowledge that some professionals advise their clients (jobseekers) to use C4 envelopes. This is for top level jobs where the applicant will also be using very good quality paper and goes back to the days when print on a document could be damaged if it was creased/folded along a line of type so that it was more difficult to read.
It might also be appropriate where an applicant sends in very long CVs. Normally one advises on two sheets for a CV but there are some jobs (eg IT contracting) where more is expected so that each project they have worked on can be described.
For job applications, I have never used anything above a C5 and have generally found a DL envelope adequate.
For jobs below senior management, as an employer I would view the use of a C4 envelope as evidence of profligacy and wonder whether they would be wasting my stationery budget!0 -
How would I work out the measurements? i.e. making sure that the address shows through the window envelope?
It may depend on your envelope, but starting the address 2" down and 1" from the left has usually worked for me.- Place paper inside envelope.
- Press dot through the top left of the window with a pencil.
- Remove paper and measure location of dot.
You only have to measure it once, then remember it.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 - Place paper inside envelope.

I cannot see any problem with handwriting the address on the envelope, in clear legible writing. An employer is unlikely to see the envelope (it will be opened in the admin office). I am a senior employee, have never bothered to print envelopes for my own job applications (and I have an enviable record of getting shortlisted!) and would not be bothered to receive a handwritten envelope when I recruit staff.Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0
