Buying envelopes for sending job applications

Hi Folks
I am in the process of buying some A4 sized envelopes to send out job applications i.e. a cover letter and cv.
Would it be better if I buy A4 sized envelopes for this, so that I don't have to fold the letter & cv? If so, do you recommend that I buy ones with 'windows', so that I don't have to put a separate address label on? How would I work out the measurements? i.e. making sure that the address shows through the window envelope?
Finally, do you know of any good websites which sell cheap envelopes?
Thanks in advance.

Don't forget that you'll need large letter stamps for A4 envelopes which cost more than normal first/second class stamps. Here I go again on my own....0

I know that jobseekers are often advised to use C4 envelopes (the size to take A4 unfolded) to make a good impression when their application arrives. However it seems to me that putting 3 sheets of paper in a C4 envelope is likely to result in bent/creased contents as it progresses through the mail. I think using C5 (takes A4 folded once) still gives a good impression.
Which size you choose may also depend on the level of job you are applying for. For a Director-level appointment, C4 may be fine. For an entry level job it might suggest extravagant use of stationery.
Whichever you choose, I would not recommend window envelopes. They cost more than plain ones (this is MSE forum) and you have to set up your covering letter template to position the address correctly.0 -
Nope, buy a pack of good quality C5 sized envelopes. These will take your A4 sheets of paper folded in half, and will actually result in the contents being less creased and dog-eared when they arrive. Just two or three sheets get quite knocked about in the post, unless they are in heavy-duty paper or board backed envelopes. For my business corresspondence I only use a C4 sized envelope if I'm sending more than 6 sheets.
Make sure you fold your cv and letter very carefully, exactly in half, with only ONE clean crease across the middle.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -
Forget the envelopes with windows, i just use normal a4 size envelopes,0

the pound shops sell packs of envelopes, all sizes and seem good quality0

Hi Folks
Thanks for your replies. I did not know you need to buy different stamps if using an A4 sized envelope. Can't I just use the ordinary 1st class stamps, which cost around 46p each?
I take it that the C5 sized envelope would be better than A4? The only problem is that I would need to get address labels done from somewhere. Is anybody aware of any cheap places that I could have them done?
Thanks in advance.0 -

Assuming you have a printer, the C5 size envelopes should go thru, put them thru from the manual feed tray, one at a time.
Alternatively buy A4 sheets of address labels and put those thru your printer - just ask if you need help with the layout.I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.0 -
The postage costs depend on the size and weight of the letter you are sending. C5 should be the standard letter rate unless you go over the weight limit. A4 size will fall into the large letter category and will cost more - 75p first class, 58p second class.

Check if you're not sure - you don't want your prospective employer paying the surplus delivery charge.
Edit - as an employer, I wouldn't mind your application and CV being folded in half. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

Currently the normal first class stamps have a postal value of exactly 46p. The large size are 75p first class or 58p second.
The general opinion on here so far is that C5 envelopes would be better than C4 for this purpose.0
