this site was slow for me last night and i kept getting database errors
and last night, they might of been doing a backup as i got a database error saying something about we may be backing up the server0 -
My guess is that everyone is clogging it up trying to respond to all the stupid "studentphil" posts.0

this was the message i was on about in my other post
ApologiesThe MoneySavingExpert.com forums, have a minor glitch. This is most likely because we’re performing the regular Forum back ups and this means the capacity is temporarily reduced (or that the site has a huge amount of current traffic).
All should be ok in a minute
If you wait 30 seconds to a minute, and refresh your web browser, everything should be ok.
So sorry0 -
hmm I use my employers server (a main university) and my home server is NTL. Seems to be a problem with me no matter what time I log on, or where i log on from.
Hope tha hamsters get a good Christmas feed so they can run a bit faster in the new year!0 -

Not "bordering on"...........try "completely".
Don't think I'll bother here again, I'll go with a grown up site.

Hey guys
Apologies, our "backups" are indeed putting an unfortunately large strain on our servers at the moment. We are indeed trying to fix it, for most of the morning yesterday the site was running at full speed with between 5000-6000 users which was great for us, however the lunch time backup seemed to slow us down and from that point we really now struggle to catch up again. Please bare with us on this one, we know that it is infuriating at times but unfortunately it takes time to get the new boxes into place but we are trying to get the service backup to a higher level of service.
Thanks

I think albertross' point about compressing page size is worthwhile though
I don't know anything about designing webpages but a few right-clicks on this page show that the page itself is over 250k. I'd assume (correct me if wrong) that all of the graphics in the header and menu/toolbars at the top could be separately served files and users' PCs would pull them from cache; after all they are updated every few weeks rather than each call for a thread update. Or even that some could be replaced with a return to main site button0
