booking in appointment. Scan ?

I will introduce myself before I type my question. My name is Toni and this account belongs to my Dad.

As he will prob already have told you I am pregnant :D. I got my letter from the hospital this morning and it asks me to come in for my booking in appointment. The letter says that the appointment will take 2 or 3 hours. I am wondering if I will get my scan at this first appointment or is this appointment just to get booked in and then I'll be called back at a later date for my scan? If it makes any difference I will be 11 weeks and 5 days on the date that I go for the appointment.

I'm so excited and would love to think that I will be scanned when I go to my first appointment. Cant wait to see my baby on the screen.

Do you think I will get a scan?

Thank you so much for reading. Toni xxx

hI Toni, my daughter is the same age as you so I'm only going by 17 years ago, but I'm pretty sure I had a scan at my booking in. Your dad sounds like a lovely man, by the way, and I wish you all the best for the future. With parents like yours you'll have all the support you need.

    My appointments were all separate:-

Scan at the hospital at 12 weeks
Booking-in appointment with the community midwife at 17 weeks
Second scan at the hospital at 20 weeks

Each of those only took around 20 minutes. Given the length of your first appointment and the fact it's at the hospital, you will probably get your first scan ... but why don't you phone them on Monday and ask? ;)

Hi, congrats! Yes, you probably will have a scan at that appt. However, I know some areas do not scan until the detailed scan at 20wks ish.

Have you been to the doctors and seen a midwife as well? Its unusual to have the hospital as your first appointment at all????l

Its usually scan at 12-14 weeks then 21ish weeks

    Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

Did the instructions tell you to drink a lot of water before going? If they did, then you'll have a scan.

I had a booking in appt with midwife at local doctors surgery (after first seeing GP at 6 weeks ish) at about 8 ish weeks, and that was when my next midwife appt (few weeks later) and scan appt (about 12 ish weeks and about 20 weeks) was booked. You are a bit further along though so maybe they will do the scan at this first appt....someone should have told you what to expect, gave you some sort of leaflet or something surely ?

Not neccessarily, all my apopintments (I had at least 1 a fortnight) told me to drink lots of water. It was in case they suspected something was wrong with the baby and needed a scan asap, or so I was told!

With my daughter I was in London and went to the hospital for my booking in appointment and I got my scan at the appointment.

With my son I was living in Fife and I had my appointment at the doctors and recieved my appointment for my scan a few weeks later.

I doubt that the booking in appointment lasts two hours though unless you were getting your scan. Just give the hospital a wee call and ask.

    Congratulations xx
  • I would guess you will get scan. I wouldn't think you will actually get seen for 2-3hrs, more like wait 20mins, see midwife& do paperwork (30mins) then wait an hour, have scan (20mins) then wait 1/2hr then see another midwife to discuss scan. Thats what I've found on recent visits for scans.

At a diff hospital with DS1, booking app was 7ish weeks, scan was 12weeks and at the scan I only had scan, I didn't see midwife or anyone else.

I was seen about every 4-6weeks during pregnancy, I think that was normal as there were no complications.

Here I got booking at 9weeks, scan date of 12weeks & next midwife was to be at 16weeks.

Different counties, different hospitals do it differently.

    Hi Toni,

Lots of us here recognise your dad's username from the first thread...

just popping in to say congratulations and we're all so glad you are excited!

    I'd suggest you either
    a) ask at your GP surgery - they'll probably know what the usual practice is
    b) post the name of the hospital and you'll get someone local who has been there recently
or c) take the bull by the horns and ring the hospital.

Best of luck with finding out what you want to know - and of course we're wishing you a happy, healthy pregnancy
