Jeffer I usually get my dog food online but they didnt have any and i needed it.I had to spend a tenner just to get the blooming dog food.As for your comment about how anyone can go out of the house without a few quid in their purse well maybe we dont all have a lot of spare quids to have in our purses all of the time.Any cash i tend to have in my purse has already been lifted from the bank and designated for certain things. As was stated on here it is more the sense of GREED that some of these shops have.I can't understand anyone who goes out of the house without a few quid in their purse. What would happen if you needed to get a taxi or something?
Madness.
As for the pet shop in question,in my opinion they will lose custom eventually because people wont tolerate it.As far as i am aware its the only shop in the town who has this set at £10 whilst the other retailers have theirs at £5.If i hadnt been in dire need of the dog food for my dog and also known that they had the machine set for this amount, i wouldnt have bothered even going into the shop to buy anything based on the mere principle that the shop has this machine set for a tenner.Believe me i wont be going there again for the same reason. They have already lost a customer.0 -
Perhaps one of the reasons its struggling is because of the £10 set up on its machine. It has lost me as a customer because of it.Who is to say that others do not feel the same way.Customers are struggling too.Shops should not take advantage of them.+1
TBH it smacks of 'struggling to keep their head above water' which is how most small retailers are at the moment. If Tescos are floundering what chance has anyone got?0 -
No donna, just wondering where this pet shop gets off with being the only shop in town with a machine set at £10.The little coins are supposed to stay in my account so i can pay for other things that need to be paid online as this is what the majority of folk want these days. When your on the dole as i am every penny in the bank is already designated for something else.If all shops were to behave as this pet shop does then where or where would our little coins be then.Anyhow the only benificairy in this whole thing was my dog who ended up with a new collar and lead which she didnt need, which I had to buy in order to be able to buy the dog food.Huh and some folk say it isnt a set up.Donna-Marie01 wrote: »
Hi Im a newbie and after reading these many valid and NUMEROUS posts about this issue, SOME people seem to have lost sight of what HazelC56's original post was about - It was about simply feeling ripped off and a 'need-to-know' of your consumer rights - its not about who knows more than another person - neither is it about, GASP, maybe actually using the left over money to buy something else as implied by BelfastGirl as Im pretty sure that concept has occurred to most of us - or maybe HazelC56 has just been wondering what those little coins are for every time she hands someone a tendered note and gets these little coins back! Hardy think so :rotfl:0 -
If they sell less than other shops then maybe they shouldnt have bothered getting a machine in in the first place. They have lost me as a customer because of it so not good for their business.I havent come across any other shop with a £10 amount just this one so it isnt that common in my town.donnac2558 wrote: »I remember going into the pet shop on the Woodstock Road a few years back to get cat litter. They had a sign up min spend debit card was £10. The cat litter was £9.50 but the owner let me use the card anyway. I said thank you and she said, we had to put the min £10 because people where coming in buying something at £1.50. The card machine company charges the retailer a per centage each time the card is used. Anything below £9 and they were losing money each transaction. So they rounded the amount up to the £10. It depends on the size of the shop and how much business they do. A MACE etc will of course sell more sweets, papers and other stuff in one transaction than say a small pet shop.
Oh and I have noticed now most shops have the £10 where before they did £5.0 -

perhaps the shop should raise all prices for everyone to allow you to pay for your dog food by card?0 -

Then you would be compaining that they dont take cards?

Its maybe very good for business.
If they are only making 40p on that item, and the transaction fee was going to be 35p for a debit card, then they would have sold it and made 5p.
They can now sell that same bag to someone else and make 40p.0 -

Why didnt you just draw out a tenner from a machine, then you'd still have the £8.50?
For someone who is on a tight budget you spent £8.50 needlessly.
Or why not just buy 7 bags of the food? Theres a long date on them anyway.0 -

Exactly thats my whole gripe paul.I could have done without HAVING to spend £10 for the sake of 1kg of dog food.Re.7 bags of dog food..it was a particular kind i get for my dog who has a food intolerance and this was the next best thing i could get for her.I usually get it online(the one that agrees with her)so 7 bags of this wasnt possible...or i might have done so.I wasnt near a bank and i needed the food. Was taken unawares. Why didnt you just draw out a tenner from a machine, then you'd still have the £8.50?

I think I see what this thread is about now. The OP actually paid £10 for the £1.50 dog food as the card was the only way she could pay for it.
So it was a choice between paying the extra or returning empty-handed to a hungry dog. I have a dog and I must admit I would not want to criticise the OP - those sad eyes can be very very persuasive
Have you tried just ordinary food and not necessarily dog food? Often it is cheaper and they really love it. I also think it is healthier for them - but the dog food manufacturers (and some vets who promote it in their surgeries) would disagree with me on that one. I mix a little bit of what I eat in with the regular dog food and he loves it (most of it anyway). I think the variety is healthy.0
