You could go into a bank with your ID and debit card, withdraw the £1.50 cash, then go pay for your dog food.

Buy your dog food in bulk.

Buy the dog food with the rest of your shopping.

At the end of the day, there is nothing new about this and the shop is doing nothing wrong.

There is no big conspiracy to try and make you spend more in the shop.

After all, some shops won't even have the facility to pay by card at all, it is an added convinience, so if they choose to operate them in a specific way, you can hardly complain about it.
Thanks for the advice Laim,am on it now...BTW dog food was merely an example.

You have to be reasonable though.

If you were only using dog food as an example, for arguments sake what if somebody went into a shop to buy a newspaper or packet of chewing gum for less than 50p, would you still expect the shop to process a card transaction for that?

Well Liam, put it this way,When i go into my local Boots Chemist I can buy anything and use the paypoint. The point being once again...why can one shop have one amount and another have another amount. You see you never can tell what shop is going to have what amount It would be good if they all had the same general amount so that some of us dont run the risk of going into a shop to buy an item only to find that we have to spend £10 in order to have the transaction processed, especially if there isnt another shop with the same item at the same price or God forbid there isnt an ATM nearby or worse still if a person has to be careful what they spend/lift out of their account. For example, the pet shop i refer to in my title will only accept £10 and i know that its a take on as they could have installed a different model of paypoint terminal or chosen a different set amount when they first took it on.....now just assuming i dont have that amount to spare in my account, what am i supposed to do then.(unemployed here)have to watch the pennys.Cant keep lifting tenners and fivers out of the bank for obvious reasons. As far as i know this particular pet shop is the only shop in my town to have their paypoint set at a tenner,so what does that tell you.
Dont get too wound up about this,im not..its merely a query on my part and the query was answered ages ago by another poster.

Seems he is enjoying the whole debarcle:beer:

You should re-read my post again. Its not a take on.

Boots is a huge multinational that can negotiate their rates. They put millions through these terminals.
The pet shop may be a single one or part of a small chain or maybe not - they dont get to choose the rates, the banks impose them.

If I could choose 5p per transaction and 1% then I would, I dont have the choice, the bank tells me what the costs are due to the amount of business I put their way.
Im not ripping people off or taking them on, its what I am being charged. I dont take card payments at all for less than 15 quid.

Hi Im a newbie and after reading these many valid and NUMEROUS posts about this issue, SOME people seem to have lost sight of what HazelC56's original post was about - It was about simply feeling ripped off and a 'need-to-know' of your consumer rights - its not about who knows more than another person - neither is it about, GASP, maybe actually using the left over money to buy something else as implied by BelfastGirl as Im pretty sure that concept has occurred to most of us - or maybe HazelC56 has just been wondering what those little coins are for every time she hands someone a tendered note and gets these little coins back! Hardy think so :rotfl:

It seems it's mainly the little retailers that impose a minimum spend, shops like Lidls,Tescos & the CoOp don't have a min spend which I suppose is because they can afford the card charge,Some shops, like my butchers, don't accept debit cards at all.
Although I do agree that a £10 spend before you can use a debit card is excessive & smacks of pure greed by the retailer, especially with so many people using cards over cash & I can see it backfiring on him.Especially if you've got only £9.50 in your bank account, then you'll take your business elsewhere if all you want is two boxes of cat food which come to £6.00 ish....

If you've only got £9.50 in your bank account, you'd be better off selling the dog or seeing a bank manager pretty sharpish rather than posting on here.

I can't understand anyone who goes out of the house without a few quid in their purse. What would happen if you needed to get a taxi or something?

    Madness.
