Although I do agree that a £10 spend before you can use a debit card is excessive & smacks of pure greed by the retailer,

Hardly greed - it's not as if they take any money from you without selling you goods in return.

    +1

TBH it smacks of 'struggling to keep their head above water' which is how most small retailers are at the moment. If Tescos are floundering what chance has anyone got?

I tried to pay for my tv license at a paypoint with my debit card (£145.50) and I was informed it would cost me an extra £1 on top.

I meant greed as in setting the limit at £10 instead of £5.A lot of shops have the £5 limit,I've never came across one that has a £10 limit.

If you've only got £9.50 in your bank account, you'd be better off selling the dog or seeing a bank manager pretty sharpish rather than posting on here.

    What an idiotic reply.
I'm on ESA at the moment since a stroke a few months ago, therfore I (and thousands like me) don't have a lot of money coming in,yet I still manage to pay my bills & feed myself & my cat AND still have money left before the next ESA payment. It may not be a lot,but I still have it without selling my pet or seeing my bank manager either. As to posting on here, what's that got to do with things..

I remember going into the pet shop on the Woodstock Road a few years back to get cat litter. They had a sign up min spend debit card was £10. The cat litter was £9.50 but the owner let me use the card anyway. I said thank you and she said, we had to put the min £10 because people where coming in buying something at £1.50. The card machine company charges the retailer a per centage each time the card is used. Anything below £9 and they were losing money each transaction. So they rounded the amount up to the £10. It depends on the size of the shop and how much business they do. A MACE etc will of course sell more sweets, papers and other stuff in one transaction than say a small pet shop.

Oh and I have noticed now most shops have the £10 where before they did £5.

I think it is rediculous to use a card to pay for something costing £1.50. It is annoying for the shop keeper as cash would be cheaper for them to process and it is annoying for people in the queue as it keeps them waiting while the customer punches in their PIN.

I pay mine on line now for that very reason.

That was my whole point spike. They have no need to set it so high.Shops may be struggling but so are customers.
