I appreciate your point that there are others who are badly off but TBH not having enough food is a pretty bad thing. I agree with those who are saying you should get a food parcel and 'pay it back' if you feel you need to. The other possibility is that you could offer to do some work in return for the parcel? No one should have to go hungry over a longish amount of time in this day and age...0

I would like to thank, most profoundly, each and every one of you for your kindness in replying with advice and support - and, in particular, those who have been sweet enough to PM me. SO many lovely people sending me replies has nourished my soul better than any food could.
I will grovel again to my parents tomorrow (at least, as far as the prescription is concerned). I have found £2 in a pocket, so that's better than nothing.:)
I am normally more of a 'glass half-full'-type person, but I reached a point of despair yesterday when, after a particularly long and difficult week, my card was declined in Sainsburys for three reduced-priced items and a pint of milk... As I mentioned in reply to one of the good people who PM'd me, it's mostly petrol prices that are doing this to me, plus general rising costs. At my IVA review last year, the 'money to live on after essential expenses' was down by £84 per month (bad enough, aargh!), but they wouldn't reduce my monthly repayments. NOW, the 'down by' figure is just over £120. And my wages are frozen for three years, "thanks" to government cuts. Ain't life grand?! I can't put into words how grateful I am to you all. Suffice it to say that if I can ever do the same for you...

Just read the thread, sorry to hear you're having a tough time.
A couple of suggestions, which you might have already thought of, but just in case...
Do you have a Sainsbury's nectar card? - I've bought groceries using the points before at the self-serve tills. Was short on cash and was going to use debit card, then saw the option to pay with nectar points.
Boots advantage card - I think you can use advantage points for food purchases, not v thrifty but will help at this moment of need?
 Scour pockets/sofa for lost pennies.
Could your parents give you a bit of a food parcel? Some tins from store cupboard
Hope things aren't too tough between now and pay day. x"Does it spark joy?" - Marie Kondo

I hope things are better for you soon, the wierdest thing for me reading this thread was that your cupboards are totally bare... I always have something, however wierd and wonderful it may be, and can't imagine not having anything in the cupboards at all. Glad you found that £2 though, you can make it go a long way... really good luck Ruth, give Jasper a big cuddle from me :-)

Thanks Ally and Elsie; I really appreciate your replies.
Jasper and I are doing OK, thanks to a temporary loan from a generous soul and the love and support here on MSE. Our grins slipped a little bit yesterday when part of the exhaust pipe fell off our car  - we had to be rescued by the RAC! We didn't get home until nearly 8pm - and Jasper is NOT a dog who likes to be kept waiting for his dinner! It was a new exhaust as well - the garage had used an old clamp to put it on. Grrr...! Jasper and I will be paying the garage a visit tomorrow for a "little discussion"!
Thank you for the advice about the Nectar Card/Reward Points. I do save them up, as well as points from my local Co-op. Everything except the Boots ones go on groceries and I save-up the Boots ones (if I can) for a special treat for myself at Christmas.
Normally my cupboard ISN'T totally bare - but last month was a bit tight as well and I'd used-up my standby basics and ran out of cash before I could re-stock. One of Jasper's local "fans" has bought him some tins of food, which was very kind - so he's no longer looking at me in a sort-of "I wonder what she tastes like...?" way!
Very many thanks again. You're all lovely. :A R&J xxx

When you take your car back, suggest to the garage that they might like to compensate you by way of a small refund perhaps, or at least a percentage off your next service bill, though you could say that you don't want to use them again and press for a cash refund! if you work out how long you were delayed by at your normal hourly rate + 50% for overtime + inconvenience, that should be enough for a weeks basic groceries.0
