I think the emphasis should be on stopping rude and offensive posts from oldies and newbies alike.

My view is that some will take advantage of that newbie status, especially those who don't think twice about AE's! Some people actually are trolls who just like to wind others up :o

Like the badge and agree with the concept. Good encouragement for newbies and they won't be put off posting.

I never spot the AE's anyway, but all you have to do is ignore them.

Reading what the badge actually says makes me wonder what MSE is actually doing to 'especially' protect new posters more than it does its more experienced posters?

To me the badge seems pretty patronising, I'd hate to have that as my avatar if I'd just joined the forum

Ahh Why? Does the badge have magical powers that protects them is it as powerful as the sword of greyskull?

Or is it in reality a patronising Graphic that most people will ignore and the rest will see as a target and infact make no difference to new posters what so ever.

Personally I think that instead of spending 10 minutes designing this graphic the forums team would have been more useful actually spending 10 minutes moderating some of the forums.

    I totally agree too poppy.

Instead of helping new users interact, the badge is actually doing the exact opposite, its stigmatising them and is actually saying "Look at me everyone, I dont know what I am doing". Its a bit like making a new employee of a firm wear a placard around their necks letting them know they are new.

If MSE really wants to help new users then they must start treating every poster equally and the only way they can do this is to adhere to the following points. (but I wont hold my breath):)

    1........Get rid of the postcount

2........Get rid of the thanks count

3........Get rid of the join date

4........Get rid of the medals and rosettes

5........Stop labelling new users as "newbies" as the term is patronising.

6........Start taking report alerts from new users seriously.

7........Stop treating new users as idiots because some of them are probably more intelligent than you.:)

8........Stop banning new users on the say so of a few "veterans" who have nothing better to do than consistently report people.

    9........Treat EVERYONE equal.

    Thank you.:)

The answer to your problem is quoted above MSE. Absolutely spot on Forumname. :)

Solves the newbie (sorry) issue in one fell swoop, and far more effectively I might add than an ineffectual badge that simply repeats the information to be found half an inch above it and offers no 'protection' whatsoever.
