Not good after 20 week scan

My DD2 was given an 8% chance of survival after 20 week scan, due to lung and heart problems, we were basically told the option of termination was recommended.
I wouldn't terminate a child for any disability and now have a very healthy 10 month old, whose hole in the heart has closed, and her lung problem gives her a 96% chance of survival, but will be the same as any other child by two if things progress as they are.
I refused amnio and all the other tests, I wanted my baby and was prepared to do whatever it tookOPs so far £42,139

With eldest, they told me to expect a small baby, that he would be lucky to be 6 and a half pounds and would be very small in length....he was 8lbs and 58 cms long (and 16 days late)
Middle son they said would be larger than eldest...he was 7 and a half pounds and 56cms (14 days late) ,although that was not their fault, he had a true knot in his cord and had been starved of food and some oxygen for the last 5 weeks of pregnancy, only a little to begin with but gradually more and more as he descended. They later estimated he would have been 10lbs+ if that had not happened.
Youngest they got completely and utterly wrong, I wasn't too sure of my dates as he had been conceived whilst I was on the contraceptive injection but the milestones of pregnancy kept being at least 4 weeks behind my other pregnancies..they stuck by their scan dates (lots of them done due to what happened with middle son).
Apparently, youngest was going to be my biggest baby yet...he was 6 and a half pounds and 50 cms long....and at least 4 weeks early according to the midwife as he could not control his temperature, his blood sugars and was covered in lanugo. I had been induced and he was born at what they thought had been 5 days after my due date by their scans (they actually started inducing 2 days after due date due to complications with middle son and his delivery).
They did discover an empty sac on the first scan and thought it may have been a twin but after youngest was delivered, decided that it had been a pregnancy that had occured, lost within a few weeks and then I had conceived with youngest straight away, hence the mistake over the dates. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
Well sadly we're still in limbo. Hospital cannot see the pulmonary outflow tract so we have been referred to a St Mary's in Manchester for a fetal heart specialist to diagnose. Don't know what to think now. A Small baby (but supposibly physically ok) except for not being able to 100% say teh heart structure is ok. Still stuck in a nightmare - it is the not knowing that is the worst thing.

Hi Beakerange
Im sorry to hear your news
I know what you mean about the not knowing being the worst
I had my 20 weeks scan last Tues and was told and the baby was measuring small and was showing 2 potential signs of having problems (bright bowel and enlarged vertricles) We were told we would have to see the consultant but not to worry (what planet are these folks oni've been up to high dough since) I am goin on Thursday to see the consultant so thankfully not too long a wait - is such a worry though
Hope they dont leave you waiting too long for an appt in Manchester - lots of hugs in the mean time xxComp Wins 2011 : Cant wait to start listing everything:j:j:j0 -

Sad:(You say "a St Marys in Manchester", well you will be in very good hands. The Placenta Clinic I attended was on the Research Floor there; they handled my admittance through triage, and then carried out my emergency c/section. I then spent 14 days on the postnatal ward, and Andrew spent his 11 weeks in their NICU. He now returns to the neighbouring Childrens Hospital for all his various appointments.
I considered myself very fortunate to be that close to, and be cared for at, St Marys. It's new (just 2 years old this summer) and is a teaching hospital, so stays at the forefront of research & development.

HI All,
Seen the heart specialist today - no problem with the heart - YIPPEE.
I have turned down the amnio. We are leaving it in the lap of the Gods. I am considering it as just a small baby!
Local Hospital will be in touch with me tomorrow as to my on-going care (which will mean a LOT more scans to keep on eye on the growth). I know there is still an issue as the baby is still small and no growth spurt has happened yet but I will do whatever I can to try and improve the situation. I have even been eating raw spinach leaves for iron - YUK!
Thanks All
