Motoring
Broken limbs and driving
If you have broken a limb you do not need to tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) about it.
In the interests of road safety you must be sure at all times that you can safely control a motor vehicle. You should check your insurance cover to see if there are any restrictions about driving with a broken limb.

My hard copy policy T&C's from RBS specifically mentions broken limbs...
That's odd, because neither the policy summary (https://uk3.u-k-i.com/rbs/car/Policy_documents/rbs_motor_policysummary.pdf) nor the policy wording (https://uk3.u-k-i.com/rbs/car/Policy_documents/rbs_motor_policywording.pdf) contain this exclusion, so which document is it actually contained in?0 -
hard copy booklet sent to me when I first took out the policy....which is several years ago now...but there haven't been any specific alterations..ie those I receive annually....
however..since the direct.gov [link] specifically mentions it, regarding insurance, then isn't it a good idea to find out before the fact, rather than afterwards when the insurer decides not to pay out?No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

But you said:
"Many insurers now specifically state that no cover will exist if the vehicle is driven by a driver with a broken limb."
I've never seen this term before and a quick check through the largest 10 motor insurer's wordings shows no mention of it. If the exclusion is not there, then an insurer cannot rely on it.0 -

that maybe so....I suspect over the years, 'policy' wording has been simplified..however,if involved in a claim where a driver has a physical infirmity [ie a broken/ splinted limb], that alone raises questions surrounding 'levels of control' of the vehicle....?
Maybe third party liability would still exist in such a case...it does under a variety of circumstances...the issue will be, will the insurer then seek to recover losses from the policyholder, using rules governing the issue and maintenance of licences?
Would you care to put it to the test? No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

I suppose they might if there was a licence issue but, as you posted earlier, there is no need to notify DVLA about broken limbs so no licence implication0 -

yes, I agree...sorry, the 'copy' included more information than was necessary...from the Gov.org page.....it was the actual 'warning' that I wanted....
another consideration is Road Safety Act 2006, para 26 amendment 41D [a]?No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0
