Wrong item sent to me - What can I expect to happen..?

I bought an expensive guitar capo on eBay, but I was sent a mini ukulele stand, lol. Obviously a mix up, I've contacted the seller and have sent the item back. HOWEVER the seller seems to think that they only have to refund me the price of the original item. This means that I will be refunded around £9, when the original P+P was £2 and the return P+P a further £2, meaning I will be down £4 in total. Is this right? I understand that mistakes happen, but it doesn't really seem right that I have to go through quite a lot of inconvenience AND have to pay for my troubles, through no fault of my own..

Unfortunately that is ebay for you.
A decent seller would refund postage, have you asked them?
You can't make a seller refund your postage that you paid to return the item but you can still leave appropriate feedback.
If you message them they might refund.

Simmed I still can't believe how unlucky you are on ebay.

I've been sent wrong items twice. The first time I sent it on to the other buyer and the seller refunded all the costs (the other buyer also sent me my item).

Second time (last week!) the buyer refunded me in full and said I could keep the wrong item.

Personally wouldn't of sent it back before they agreed to pay the postage.

However now you have, I would treat the expensive guitar capo as an INR and open a claim with PayPal.

When I received the wrong item the seller agreed to refund the cost of me posting the item back to them. I would leave appropriate feedback if they do not refund at least your return postage as its not your fault they sent the wrong item.

Is it actually eBay/PayPal policy that they MUST refund the return P+P? Or is it simply good of them to do so, but there is no compulsion?

I'm starting to think I should have never sent the item back at all. That way I could simply do an INR and get a full refund, no?

I just hope the seller is decent and gives me a full refund, including the return P+P. But if he doesn't, is that the end of the matter, and I am out of pocket?

You mean you hope the seller is as decent a seller as you are..oh I forgot you NPB buyers who pay the paypal id YOU give them and try to blame them for not speaking good enough English to understand you.

Under ebay/paypal rules, the seller DOES NOT have to pay return postage, even though it was their mistake.

How did you send it back? This is crucial, because if you open a dispute for item not as described (where seller has to give you initial postage and item cost refund, but you pay return P&P), you will have to send the item back tracked, otherwise the seller can just claim they haven't received it.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Post by the other person ignored as no helpful advice was given, sadly.

    That's ridiculous, don't you think?

Hm, I didn't get tracked, just standard 1st class I think. I've got the receipt which states the address it is sent to, which says "this receipt is proof of your posting", that enough? :p

    Thanks for the advice :money:

If you open a INR dispute & win it then you will get your original payment inc p&p refunded. As for the return postage for the wrong item, that will be down to the seller, if you had opened a SNAD case with ebay or Paypal would have told you to refund tracked for a refund but not of the return postage. Did you buy from a business seller, if so what does their return policy state about return postage?
I'm assuming that the seller mixed up two orders, easily done. I would have waited for instruction from the seller as they may have asked you to post on to the other buyer & other buyer send yours on to you & then refund you the postage.
I'm not sure why you put the stick out tongue onto the above post. If having POP is what you're relying on for your refund then you actually need proof of delivery if the seller doesn't play nice.
