Why do people outbid at the last second

I agree with the above. .. Sniping seems like a dodgy wicket to me.0

Though eBay auctions work on a completely different basis from "live" auctions, there is the same danger of getting carried away if you're bidding in the last minute without a clear idea of what you think the item is worth to you. Occasionally, the "buzz" can take over from common sense when people get involved in a bidding war. As a seller, I like when that happens! As a buyer, I try to exercise a bit of self-control.0

I don't understand the problem. It's how auctions work. You should have put in the highest amount you were prepared to pay. You don't get art collectors at Christies or Sotherbys being heckled because they have bid during the 'going once, going twice.....' part of the auction before the gavel falls. I suggest you buy 'fixed price' in future! Auctions aren't for you.
I do all my bidding in the closing seconds. You win some, you lose some. However, it's gratifying when you win an auction in the closing seconds knowing that someone has been stalking the item for days and it has slipped through their grasp. And yes, I do sleep well.
By the way proxy bidding on Ebay is only the same as a commission bid at auction. It's not the taking part but the winning that counts.0 -
once you get used to ebay you'll soon realise its mainly newbies that bid on auctions. most ebay users snipe auctions to ensure they dont get outbid. bidding early on auctions is crazy, all it does is bump up the final value price (either by other bidders - on in some cases the seller bumping up their own auctions) dont give sellers or bidders the chance to bid up the price, simply set a snipe and let the sniper tool do it for you (that way you dont even need to be online - you can snipe while your offline, asleep out of the country or whatever!)
theres a FREE ebay sniper just been launched this week by Goofbay. http://www.goofbay.com/sniper/
Completely free to all, no downloads, no trials, no weekly limits. you just sign up, log in and start sniping! if you have the toolbar you dont even need to leave ebay to snipe, simply click a button from your address bar when your viewing ebay items.
this is the only sniper that actually has been tested and approved by ebays developer team0 -
I cannot understand why people bid with days left to go
Because we don't want to have to sit watching ebay all day?
If someone's willing to bid more than I consider a fair price, then so be it; there are few things on ebay so rare that there won't be another one along soon. The only real risk is that the seller will use fake buyer accounts to push the price up beyond what I could otherwise have bought for, but even then I'm still getting it for a reasonable price at the end of the day.
Certainly I'm sure as hell not going to give my account details to some random web-site.0 -

i imagine you will always pay top price for things or lose auctions bidding early. bidding early on ebay is just stupid FACT. your just giving everyone else (including the seller) a chance to outbid you at bump up the price to your max bid.
if someone wanted your ebay account details theres far more cunning ways than producing an ebay sniper and getting ebay to check it out. goofbay is a major uk affiliate and work closely with ebay. if they were using your account details for anything underhand then ebay would soon close the site down.
fair play to you if you dont want to snipe auctions but eventually your gonna get fed up of getting sniped by everyone else that is (or your gonna spend a fortune buying things at top dollar because sellers are bumping up the price of the auction). ive been sniping for 3years now and never had a single problem with account security.0 -
So does anyone else use goofbay for sniping.0
