    More experience yes lots and lots more then me.

    I do ask them and I ply them with many many drinks as I reel off my long list of questions.

    Bought potatoes at the same time as them and planted the day after them yet theirs are huge compared to mine.

    I use the same stuff as them because its bought from the allotment shop.

    How about fertilizer, or what's been added to the ground before planting? Long term owned plots often have had the benefit of barrowloads of compost and rotted manure being dug into them for many years, plus the owners will know where the spuds go on the crop rotation map. My potato beds are in good soil but I also add comfrey leaves to the planting holes and earth up with a mix of grass clippings and soil, with a bit of bin compost aded.
