Overnight sleeper trains to and from Chiang Mai get reserved very quickly by block booking tour companies.
Nong Khai (imo) is a better destination than Chiang Mai. The latter is choked up with 2-strokes, and even crossing the street can be a gamble

Crossing the road in Chiang Mai is a great game of life and death. Just remember that the locals believe in reincarnation so aren't frightened of dying :) The traffic will never stop so it just a matter of stepping out and trusting your life to the fates. It's fantastic fun when you get the hang of it.

If the 2-strokes don't get you then you choke to death on their fumes.
And don't forget if you get run over by one it'll be your fault, cos if you hadn't have been there it wouldn't have happened.
And the beer never tastes the same with all that smog.
    Nong Khai rules;)

thanks for the info guys, I have directed him here to read the reviews, hello Paul if your reading lol. he has now decided that chaing mai is off the schedule and they will be going to krabi instead, so hints and tips for bkk first, how long should they stay, I've heard that 3 days is enough, and where should he go while he is there? also the best way to get to krabi and the cheapest? He likes historical things so I think the Grand palace in bkk would be a great start but you guys know better than me. also do you have to have a guide at the palace, heard quite bad things about them trying to scam you.

Mae Hong Son will be a lot cooler than Chaing Mai this time of year.

Good for elephant treks and rafting.

It is the wrong time of year to go to Thailand weatherwise too hot and very sticky, I'd go on something like Slovenia/Croatia/Montenegro, plenty to see, good weather, cheaper flights and no jet lag.
I was in BKK in January and it was sticky/humid then.

3 days is an ideal time for a first trip to BKK. It's long enough to get your bearings and to see the main sights but no so long that you get sick of the traffic, noise and pollution. After 3 days it's wonderful to leave the city and breath some fresh air.

Some good websites for Bangkok (and Thailand in general)
    http://www.asiawebdirect.com/thailand/bangkok/
http://bangkok.sawadee.com/ (Sawadee is "welcome" in Thai)

Don't worry about trying to squeeze everything in to one trip. Bangkok is the gateway to SE Asia so you are sure to be back at some point.

The weather will be hot and humid. You could spend all of your time in hotels and shopping malls but otherwise the only way to cope is to expect it and be prepared. The downpours are spectacular but usually don't last long and really clean the air (and the streets). If you want sun and no rain then go to Egypt instead.

This blog is written by an expat British teacher.

Wat Po is next door to the Grand Palace, I'd also recommend the Ancient City for a visit.

There is always Pat Pong for a little night culture.
