'High End' laptops are usually inclusive of good graphics cards and are one of the main reasons why the price pushes up.

If you don't want to play games, then you can load up the spec with a fast Dual Core Processor and 1Gb+ RAM. The other specs you have listed come as standard on most laptops anyway.

As a personal choice I like Dell, Sony and Toshiba for good laptops.
  • Hi - i can highly recommend Novatech. They are very competotively priced and have high specs. I agree with a previous post that unless you want to play games you need not spend more than 800 900 pounds for a decent laptop.

I have bought two laptops from https://www.novatech.com and have been very pleased.

    Hope this helps!
  • the sony 17 inch ones with the high spec screens are hard to beat

But 17" screen does not equate to either portability or long battery life (lots of screen to backlight)

I assume that you want this for business use and therefore 3d gaming isnt going to be a major consideration?

Dell are reasonable, we use IBM Thinkpads and they are good, have a few compaqs around and they have stood the test of time well.... brands like novatech, sony etc are much more aimed at the personal rather than business market

Thanks Astaroth. You're right - this is for business use and 17 inch screen is too big for travelling with. It won't be used for gaming so the graphics card is not an issue.

Thanks for the advice about Dell and Thinkpads. I'll look at them.

(A supplementary question - what's your view on screens that swivel round so they can be used like a clipboard with a touch screen?)

  • I find this thread most confusing. The original question was "Best High Spec Laptop?". But in fact it's only for business use so it doesn't have to be especially high spec at all. The only tricky thing is the inbuilt webcam and mic - I'm not sure how common such things are.
A first generation dual core laptop would be fine and even if the memory is not 1gb it's simple enough to get it up to this level.

If you want something a bit "different" shall we say, you can't go wrong with alienware. Very high spec laptops but generally not to everyones taste. I'm sure you'll get my drift when you look at the link

It depends on your job really.... our engineers who go out to write reports on vehicles that have been damaged in accidents/ thefts/ fires use them and the majority of them think they are great however these guys only alternative is to have a clipboard with a paper version of the form which they then have to take home and type it all up - when your at the side of the road looking at burnt out car you arent going to be setting up a traditional laptop.

For anyone who is more office based I personally think they are gimmicky and just something else to breakdown.

Whilst laptops aimed at business users are very much overpriced I can never complain about the size, weight or battery life of my work laptop and it has taken a couple of heavy bumps without any affect Of cause the whole docking station thing is good too for the rare occasion I am actually at my own desk. My personal laptop was cheaper is more powerful, has more bells and whistles which I will probably never use but is about 4 times the weight - more if you exclude the power packs, is no way near as stable and has a 1/3 the battery life.... at the same time it is fit for purpose of what I need a personal laptop for.

Cheers for this. I would actually be interested in a laptop that can be "docked" and then I get rid of my desktop at work.

Of course, this brings in (for me anyway) the whole issue of backing up as I use my laptop/desktop as backups for each other.

    Fair comment.

I was really asking, "how can I spend the two grand budget that my company are allowing me?"
And many threads ask about "value for money" or "best deal laptops", so I wanted to ask the opposite question. But it is for business use only (i.e. I don't play games) but I want as many features as possible; and I am hearing that this is not an issue.

    Thanks
