Is there any way of switching them off ? Is that safe ? Mine is better since I did what you said in here, but no doubt it will start going slow again...

I suppose it was hoping for too much that it would work...oh well!

I've found 2 references to what might be the same problem.

I'm out of my depth really, so any help would be very welcome.

Edit, Just realised the second link was posted back in February, so it's probably not relevant....oops.

switching updates off is possible but not recommended for the novice/ faint of heart/ I prefer to install updates at my discretion -- again not recommended for the novice ..

I don't know if Internet Explorer is a problem but that's only because I don't have it installed. ;)

I guess it's plausible that anything could interfere with updates. :)

Had exactly the same problem with the "configuring windows" page stuck on 0% for ages, and then telling me that the windows reconfig had failed. Twice! Solved it by going to the Windows Updates bit of the Control Panel, looking at the updates that were waiting, and discovering (by highlighting them in turn) that one of them was to "enable future Windows downloads to run correctly" or some such. If you install that one FIRST by itself, it seems to enable the other two to install correctly.
    Worked for me!
