Windows 7 Updates Failing

Options
Hey everyone.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop that is running Windows 7 64bit.

Over the past week or so, updates have been failing on it. They seem to download okay when I'm shutting off my laptop but when I start it up again it says 0% for a long time and then ends up saying "updates failed reverting changes". I checked in the updates panel of my computer and the only updates that are ticked are "Microsoft Removal Tool" and "Windows Live Essentials" (although there are 4 other updates that are not ticked that don't appear to have downloaded =/). I've tried doing it one by one but that won't work either.

My laptop does boot okay so the update thing is just an annoyance but I know how important updates are so I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips and advice, please.

I had exactly the same problem and I have a 64 bit Sony Vaio. I found, somewhere in the update area of my lappie, something like "fix the problem with updates" and ran that, it solved the problem. Sorry, can't be more specific -- am away from the lappie atm.

Download and run Ccleaner. Sorry, can't post links. Then try installing one by one again.

I already have Ccleaner so I'll just run it now.

Okay. I've managed to install 7 out of 9 updates. It did the whole reverting changes thing, rebooted and then seemed to install them okay. The last two that need installing are the malicious removal tool and windows live essentials, which are the ones I seem to be having trouble with. I haven't tried them since I did the "fix updates" thing or Ccleaner so I'll have a go now. Here's hoping.

Ah. Didn't know that. Do you know why it fails?

I'll try that. Thank you. :)

I had this - installing the updates a couple at a time seemed to fix it.

That's what I just did, before reading your post. :p

I installed them one at a time. Not ideal, but it worked.

There was some strange behaviour from Windows update today for me too.
    First KB2534366 failed.
On the second attempt it installed, but when it rebooted everything froze at the log on screen.
I ended up having to take the battery out of the laptop to kill it. (I hate doing that!)
It has booted normally now and windows reports it is up to date, so not a major problem in the end, but it had me worried for a while.
