There was some strange behaviour from Windows update today for me too.
    First KB2534366 failed.
On the second attempt it installed, but when it rebooted everything froze at the log on screen.
I ended up having to take the battery out of the laptop to kill it. (I hate doing that!)
It has booted normally now and windows reports it is up to date, so not a major problem in the end, but it had me worried for a while.

Ack! That would have scared me a bit.

I was worried that it would get stuck in a reboot loop as I had googled previously and a lot of users said it had done that. Fortunately for me it was all okay. Phew.

I find understanding what Windows is trying to update very confusing.
Some of Microsofts KB notes might as well be in an encrypted foreign language sometimes, so I end up guessing what to do. Never a good idea!

Anyway,I'm pleased you are OK now.

    Lost your manual Jane :D

Manual? What's that?? Find it easier to learn about computers hands-on :p

I think I actually just put updates into search - great search system on Windows 7!

I managed to update it but I absolutely hate the new windows live messenger so I decided to roll back to the one I had before.

It was just too much change!

Hanging on 0% was my first symptom. I doubt IE9 has anything to do with it, although it will keep nagging you to update I expect.
I wish I'd seen the posts from Jane and Debitcardmayhem earlier suggesting the troubleshooting route.
Go to Control panel > find and fix problems > fix problems with Windows update.
I've just run it and it claims to have found and fixed a problem. Trouble is, I haven't got any updates to install to test it on now :p:D
    Might be worth a try.

O thanku god. I got a new pc yesterday and it's doing this - I was ready to take it back to the shop tomorrow! I hate windows 7 already after just 24 hours. Will go and try this, please cross everything.
