HELP! Ebay parcel lost in the post - unsure what to claim for from RM

Hi everyone.
Wonder if someone can give me any advice regarding a parcel that I posted to a winning ebay bidder that's not arrived.
The boots I sold are worth approx £45 to replace.
I sold them for £23 on Ebay
It cost me £4.41 to post them.
As they are now lost i'm filling in the Royal Mail compensation form - now - will they only refund me the £23 that my buyer paid for the boots? If so - I lose out don't I, as the boots are gone - and so is the money that I received for them as I will obviously be refunding that.
Do RM also refund the price of the postage you paid for a service they haven't provided, as the item is lost?
Seems a bit unfair if the innocent Seller loses everything - the item they were selling, the money the received for it AND the postage - I can't seem to find any clarification on RM's site - so thought i'd put a shout out on here for some wisdom!!!
Thanks for reading

For ebay items you need to provide copies of the paypal transactions including the refund, the ebay transaction and number and your proof of posting.
If you have the original receipt for the boots that might help.
When I claim I only get back what the item cost ME, not what the item cost the buyer, and I have to provide the receipt for the item and how much it cost me, but I only buy and sell new so not sure about 2nd hand.
I don't see it as being out of pocket though - it's just a void transaction where I have neither made nor lost anything.0 -
You get back the lower of the original cost or the ebay sale price plus the actual postage paid (although this varies depending on who handles the claim)
So you refund the buyer their full payment and get back from RM the £23 plus £4.41. So all you have actually lost is the £4.41 postage as you have paid that out.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Edit - ignore, brain not working :-s0 -
But they have also lost the item?
The buyer effectively gets the £23 back from Royal Mail, albeit via the seller. The seller ends up square in terms of cash (i.e. neither up nor down) but is still out of pocket for the item.
He had given th eitem up though when he sold it?
So buyer gets back exactly what they paid, seller gets back what he received for the item and apart from the postage is in exactly the same potion as he was when he sold the item.
You haven't lost the item and the amount you received for it, you can only lose one or the other.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. You don't "lose" the postage. You are in exactly the same financial position as if the item was received.0

So What about if the op did not have proof of how much the item cost?July Win: Nokia 58000

You will be fine as long as your buyer is legit.
I have a similar problem with a freesat box i sold for £40. Buyer claims not to have received so i made a Royal Mail claim. Part of this process is for the buyer to respond to Royal mail confirming that they did not receive the item, however my buyer has refused to do this and my claim has been rejected by RM - I am down £40.
I have tried to communicate with buyer but have received no response. They seemed genuine enough with +ive feedback of around 250. However they were asking for a refund due to lost item 5 days after shipped by standard parcels and their recent feedback is worsening and they appear to have 'lost' items they have shipped as a seller.0 -

Doesn't need it as unless they are a business they will be paid out on ebay sale price.
It is businesses who face the problem of claims as we tend to buy low and sell high (hopefully!) and therefore need the original cost price, which as a business we would have anyway for our HMRC returns.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
