KC have you thought if a narrow boat? I can just see you pootling up and down the waterways :)

On a money making level - my friend owns one permanently moored. Never takes it out but rents it out through airbnb.co.UK

Seems people like the quirkiness of staying in a boat over a hotel. It's moored near a major city and makes a a tidy profit. She moans about having to constantly be taking the sheets etc to be washed, but I do remind her it is a business she is running effectively.

Gets bookings for about half the month of any given month or more. Returns are strong as rented out by the night, not weekly or monthly.

BB, I wondered about that - not that I'd do it if it was my living space, but after I moved out of it, if I was near enough, it could be kept on. Very interesting option!

Or you could consider buying two near each other - so easy to maintain if you live next door for washing sheets and you never know the rented one may pay for the one your living in. :rotfl:

Back to work for me had a lovely holiday but officially starting to work through my orders - hope everyone enjoyed the holidays.

    Hi all,

Just a quick one to wish you all the best for the official start to the new year tomorrow. Tomorrow being the first day of normality! haha

Fella starts his new job tomorrow, he phoned his new boss and all is looking good. He got this job as his old company used to get their kitchens supplied by his new boss. He took the initiative to give the guy a call when he found out his old job was coming to an end and it turns out it couldn't have been a better time as the guy is so busy he is still trying to complete Decembers work load!

Had a bit of bad luck yesterday in our new car showed a fault (right outside my ex husbands house argh!) which meant it wasn't driveable. We crawled it away from his house and parked up asap. Luckily it is under warranty!

Just had to reinsure my fellas old car that's been sat off road which we were going to do in a weeks time anyway and have earned £45 cashback in doing so!

We have agreed to be really really frugal for the next 3 months and pay as much as we can off so that by the time I come back from Thailand at the end of April we SHOULD be in a position to buy another BTL as he is due a compensation cheque

just sat and updated all my business receipts etc and am about to check all my personal details

That's why I love this thread, right there :rotfl:

I'm starting up tomorrow - I thought I *might* do something today, but I couldn't hack it, so I've been gloriously idle. Now, though ... tomorrow is the start of week 34 in the countdown to retirement. I plan to be a bit sterner with myself about working while I'm at the computer.

Good luck everyone, here we go :)

    Yes, back to normal tomorrow.......today.

So here we go.........I want to make this year a corker.

Decorations down and have done some serious decluttering. 4 bags for the Chazzer, 1 for my lady who Ebays for me, and a large bag of papers for shredding. . Have earmarked 4 good strong boxes for stuff to go to the auction house, so aIming to get those packed up this week.

£107 worth of dollars exchanged so they will go into the savings pot, only another £1400 to find by Feb 1st to meet my target for this month. :rotfl:

Frugal living for me this month too. . Going to make January a use up month. The cupboards are groaning, the freezers are full. I have enough food, cleaning materials and toiletries to equip a small army. Hopefully will make some serious savings in the food budget to add to the coffers.

Can I make it £5k in 3 months. (My original target was £3k). I'm going to give it a whirl.;)

Tink - Thailand ...wahoo! You deserve it, you are sooooooo worth it. ;) My next one is Barcelona in May and I'm already thinking about somewhere warm in November.

Kay - great idea about the two boats. Brilliant.

Anyhoo off to bed now. Early start tomorrow.

    Good luck everyone.

    Let's kick a@@:D

Ll I love Barcelona but if you go try and visit a couple of places on the outskirts. I was on the verge of moving to Tarragona in 2007/2008 when the market crashed..glad I didn't to be honest but I still love the place and have had many a cheap flight to Barca

Karma, I too planned on being productive yesterday...didn't happen!

My fella has ebayed a fair bit of his computer stuff...a console and about 80 games as well as a few other items... couple of hundred pounds already confirmed which ive insisted he knocks off his loan.

    His mum asked if she could pick my brains one day re mortgages which LLs post mentioning mortgages for retirement age has spurred me on to research for her.{ Although she is only early 50s}

I have 2 quotes booked in this week which is unheard of so early in January!

Tonights tea comes courtesy of the chest freezer and a bag of spuds...fish pie (never made it before but seems easy enough)

I am also looking at improving my energy levels and strength ready for my grown up back packing haha. Im about 1.5st over my ideal weight but losing half a stone and toning up would be enough for me

  • Hey guys happy new year to you all. Look forward to becoming a thread regular(if use will have me!!) as my aim for this year is to improve net worth by over £30k. Half of that will be done by paying off debt(currently making payments of £1700-£2000 PCM) then the other half will be money saved. Iv hid my credit cards away and withdrawn enough cash for fuel and 2 nights out this month, the start of my frugal living year.

    Good afternoon all

YB. - It's great to have you back. Thanks for the link to your thread. Good idea to keep a diary of your progress. You can do it. I'll be watching you.;)

I know I mentioned this a few posts ago but I have decided that this year I'm going to take a few more risks. I have been very cautious up till now but I'm ready to stretch my wings.

An old boss of mine once taught me a game we called "Worse Case Scenario" and I often refer back to this when I have a decision to make.

Yesterday I was reminded of this when I listened to a radio programme which talked about change and risk. It was very interesting.

A widow was on there talking about "what is the worst that can happen". As she pOinted out - as widows our Worst Case Scenario has already happened - we have lost someone who mattered most in all the world to us.

    It got me thinking.

Here I am. I have lost my husband and survived. I faced bankruptcy and fought back. I'm still here, still alive and kicking. I'm even solvent. :rotfl:

Seriously, other than anything happening to one of my sons, what could possibly be worse than what I have already gone through.

If I get sick and die, so what........Im 64 - so be it. I've had a fantastic life. I've had a ball. Other than the loss of my husband I've no regrets and wouldn't change a thing.

I now feel confident that my position is strong enough to take a few punts and the odd risk......so I'm going to up my game this year.

Don't worry, I won't be stupid. I'm not about to hit the casino or the race track.......:rotfl: but I am now prepared to take the odd "leap of faith".

I mentioned I was reading a book called "The 4 hour working week". It's a bit heavy going but some Interesting ideas. Again it has reinforced my determination to be a bit less cautious from now on.

Tink - my trip to Barcelona isn't just a straightforward Holiday. The purpose of our visit is the church blessing part of DS1s nuptials in May. They are getting married In the Uk but are having a blessing in Barcelona. She went to university there and also has family in Madrid.

They have chosen Barcelona so all her family and friends in Spain who can't come to the UK don't miss out, they still get to join in some of the fun and frolics.

It is also DS2s 30th birthday that week so that is why we decided to extend our stay in Barcelona for some additional partying........I think it's going to be quite a week.:rotfl:

I dont know if we will have time to see much outside of Barcelona. Might have to save that for next time.;)

I have visited the Dali museum at Figuerres which is further down the coast - that was a riot. There was some kind of festival going on. All the locals were in fancy dress and were partying. Somehow we got dragged in to join in the frolics......I seem to recall wine being involved........

I adore Barcelona - it's one of those places that has everything. It will be DS2s first time there and I just know he will love it. I can't wait to see his reaction. He will go mad for the architecture and it's just such a fun place to be.

We will be staying in a really swanky apartment near the Sagrada Familia. :D:j

I just have to get myself slimmer and fitter by then.......

No we don't want you here!! Only joking.

Good luck with getting your net worth up.

I really want to focus this year on making some net worth...I realise I am practically on zero and at nearly 25 that sort of sickens me (for saying I am supposed to be good with money)

Although one good thing is I know a lot of people my age with car finances and loans and debt the works, so at least I am on zero and not beneath.

Why zero? Well the house was on borrowed money, the wedding was sort of on borrowed money (we borrowed it a year before and admit some got spent in other places but we topped it back up again for the day.) and now my photography business will be on borrowed money.

The house itself we have about 15k I would say if we sold it for the right price, but I will owe out 17.5k

10k for the house deposit to start with
    5k borrowing now
    2.5k for the wedding.

That figure sickens me, the 5k I will be receiving today or tomorrow I should be happy about it but my stomach is churning! Money has never scared me before but for some reason because this 5k is basically for me to spend how I like, I think it's causing more stress then happiness, it feels like a huge responsibility.

Sometimes I wish I could be irresponsible and book that holiday to center parcs I am pining for ATM ;) Excuse the pun.

Also the 1.1k I have borrowed off my Dad is looming over my head.

I've already sort of allocated it 2k towards my photography business, 2k off the mortgage and the other 1k will either pay my Dad back or fill savings pots and carry on paying him monthly.

For some reason this lump sum is making me want to be more frugal then spend, I think looking at it like that makes you realise yes 5k is a lot, but how easy it will slip through your fingers.

I could start nit picking and saying I could sell X camera and lens for Y and start classing it as being above zero but I think it would be bitter-sweet. :o

*Breaths* It's a good thing, it will push us forward. The business will start 2016 on good footing and it's the first step towards my B2L. Why don't I feel like this is a good thing? :rotfl::eek:
