  • some good ideas, however, im dealing with someone at work who has a holiday home and a farmer has bought the neighbouring land. They consider value to have dropped and repeat custom to have dropped also. Seems not everyone wants to holiday next to a pig farm!

i would. I love pigs. Especially the ones with bristly backs who appreciate a good scratch!

received a couple of cheques in the post today from some old shares i sold and got 10% back from the 3k i tried to invest in the new Woodford fund. So have to work out where to invest about 2 grand... Nice to have 1st world problems!

put the first £450 over to ratesetter as rates are back up at 6.5%. wont rush to do much with the rest as cash levels are low anyway... Tsb accounts need topping up. payday tomorrow too

met up with the company pension rep today for a little chat. Was all a bit pointless. She didn't know the difference between stocks and bonds... Time for a new job? Anyway, got what i wanted from the meeting, which is all my log ins etc to be able to view and amend my recently joined pension plan... Made 3 months contributions but up til now for all i knew it could of been invested in magic beans!! At least i can see what's going on now.

Tea rooms - I have a courtyard in front of the house. I work in catering at the moment.

Farm/gift shop - On one side of the courtyard is the farm house and on another is a two story barn. This does need some TLC so I would have to spent a little on it. We also have room for parking and a good drive.

Glamping - posh camping, I have found a company that provides those large canvas tents with bedrooms and an indoor loo.:T

Camping and caravans - Not on a large scale as we are restricted by our agreement.

A maize maze - This is something that you can do once as most of our fields are kept as grass.

Craft workshops - This would use the top of the barn and I have lots of friends who teach crafts.

Farm open days - These normally happen once or twice a year and they can be what ever you make of them.

Wedding venue - A field and a marquee or a large shed when the cattle are outside in the summer. Lots of people might like rustic weddings.

Selling plants and vegetables - I have a large polytunnel that I am putting up at the moment. I would need to plan this in advance so I plant at the right times.

The most obvious one is a B&B but this house is quite small with not enough room to put in extra loos, BUT a near neighbour moves out of his farm house and into a caravan every summer and rents out his house.

Gosh the possibilities really are endless with this one!! Just a few things to think about. Personally I would sit down with all your ideas rank them by terms of money making and then rank them by what you would enjoy the most.

I love the wedding venue idea because you can make a fortune and outsource a lot of the work, you could literally just hire it as a venue with self catering if you wanted to so all you'd have to do is meet brides take a few phone calls and general management of keeping it tidy ~ Not perhaps that easy but a part time job by far for nice returns!

Things like craft workshops sound good but I don't see the returns being major unless you pair it with other ideas, I guess it's passive income but would they really be making that much for you to charge them that much? (Sense? :rotfl:)

Thinks like glamping and a BB are good money, but the time you would have to invest so again weight up pros that it would keep you busy and the money would be worth it but do you want to have more time then money? At least with a self catering wedding venue the input is minimal for a high return (and at same time you could be more hands on by offering package deals etc which you can add a % on making you more money if you wanted to) but back to the glamping/bb if you would enjoy doing that and making money at same time?

I think this has been said but turning it into an open farm and park kind of thing for children to come and with entry fees? I think that would take some upkeep but wouldn't you be doing the same as what you do now but you would perhaps need a manned cafe and front desk and people will just come and see the animals and park. That would need some time overall, but it's the sort of thing you can leave someone else in charge of quite easily compared to a hotel dealing with complaints making sure rooms are to a standard and no one stealing/damaging things (free shampoo!! Light bulbs? why not?!)

I guess it just really boils down to time, money and enjoyment.

Not much to update here apart from spending £250 on my 2nd wedding dress a month before my wedding..I have to say the stress relief I have now is unreal. I had no idea how much stress I was under about my dress until I was driving home with my new one if that makes sense? I just didn't realise how much it was getting to me but hey ho!!! It's worth every penny not for the dress it self but just for this relief.

  • Some really good points there, Kayalana:T. I love reading about people's suggestions for new businesses, I just wish I was in a position to dive in and start one of them myself!

I may have missed something on the thread earlier:o but why did you need two wedding dresses? I'm not nosy, just intrigued, but very pleased that you are feeling a lot less stressed now you've got it:beer:

My last one was two sizes smaller then me the plan was to lose weight but when I went to get it altered (plan failed fyi lol) I just didn't like how it was on my figure and my whole back is on show which I really didn't want, was going to find a shrug or jacket but as it wasn't white or ivory (called Diamond white but hey ho) I couldn't match it or even find something that really went with it.

The new one is lighter and is high neck lined so covers my back and top of my shoulders and also my size...so win win really.

Sorry this is making me sound like a teenager but I couldn't be happier with it. My old one was only £75 and my new one is £250, I think I could sell the old one for £100-£125 easily and my new one unless it gets wrecked or I decide to keep it I could still proberally get back £200 for it at a push but I would need to dry clean it but all in all for what people spend on wedding dresses you really can't moan at me lol. :-)

On a money note, I took 2 bridesmaids and my new dress to a shop and idiot me didn't ask for a quote until the end when we had already agreed the work and she said £45 per bridesmaid dress ...at the time I was thinking that sounds an awful lot but most places charge about £15(literally just need taking up) and they didn't quote mine they were going to ring me Monday.

I am going back in the morning to try and get them back but I worry since we have basically said yes to the bridesmaid dresses they will make a fuss even though no work has been done apart from original putting pins in to get length right to do the actual work but I should get mine back no problem as they haven't quoted me yet they did say they would ring to confirm before starting on the dress.

On top of this the venue has just told me that I can set up from 11am, but only if they don't rent it during the day then it would be 6pm. I told them originally that we would be arriving about 5pm and the caterers would need to get in a bit earlier. My partner is going to ring them Monday but something tells me if we want to book the day to they are going to charge us more even though they didn't tell us this to start with...

Good morning fellow millionaires to be.

Well as you know my wealth building had rather taken a back seat of late so I bought the Sunday Times this week to study the Rich List and motivate myself.:rotfl:

My old boss is still on there and still doing very well even though he is technically retired.

If he can do it so can I.....maybe not on such a grand scale but I can give it my best shot.;)

This month my money making efforts have netted me the grand total of £8-77 and that was from Cash back on a purchase, so hardly a profit. Oh dear.

On a more positive note shifting my money around has improved my interest earnings and as they are of course passive earnings, then that's a plus.

Howver, I do really need to get my a@@ in gear now. Time to get selling and a bit of wheeler dealing.

Actually I think the rest has done me good. I'm sleeping better and feeling a lot brighter.

I went to see a nutrionist about my fibromyalgia and have been having regular Physio. It all costs money of course but it's starting to show results. I'm feeling much better now. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in again. I had really just run out of steam, not surprising really, losing a spouse and a mother within 8 months is enough to take the wind out of anyone's sails.

Still sorting out mums estate and supervising dad, he was in hopsital last week. It all takes up time and just when my own energy levels were at Rock bottom

Anyway - onwards and upwards. I'm ready to join the good fight again......;)

Kay - sounds like you are having a few hiccups with your wedding plans. I would say that's probably quite normal. And of course you want your dress to be perfect for you. If you can sell the unwanted dress then that would be great. If you can't and you've "wasted" £75 don't beat yourself up. Some people can blow that on a night at the pub......

I'm hosting dinner at a restaurant on Friday for my sons engagement - it's going to cost me a lot more than £75:rotfl:

Kaya, I agree - even if you resold the first dress for the same price, you've done well. And you don't sound like a teenager - brides of any age want their dress to fit them, and to feel good about it. Good for you for going for it!

LL, you sound quite a bit brighter, I'm glad to hear it. I'm starting to feel organised about things, which I need for my own sanity. I say this to myself every month, but I do think from this calendar month onwards, I can really start to focus on being productive. I've got a free copywriting seminar tomorrow online, so that should be helpful.

Otherwise, I've been switching money about in the accounts - a pension contribution from savings (getting the 25% tax free immediately, hurray!) withdrawing from Unit Trusts to go into a cash isa, to safeguard the capital as I really distrust where the market is right now, switching other isas around to increase the rates. And I just realised about the Santander 123 account, the way people are using it instead of isas, its 3% gross with a £2 a month charge, if you put enough in, its a good one.

But big money wise, its about learning the wheezes to get writing jobs, then rejigging and relaunching my websites - pah, an afternoon's work (not!).

  • You got that strong determination! Just add up with discipline and good practice then you will make your way out of that goal.

There is no such thing as impossible if you don't even give a try!

    Keep going!

Well After a disastrous month, ive just managed a late surge......

A bit of eBay, a bit of wheeler dealing, total of £83-21. I know, I know:rotfl: - still better than a slap round the face with a wet haddock......this will go into the "mad money fund".

I've also finally sorted out all my banking etc, should be earning a bit more interst. I bought some life insurance and switchd my health care insurance for a much better deal - so not a bad month after all.

I've been to dads solicitor and picked up mums will so I can crack on with mums estate and dads bits and next week.

Re the "Mad Money Fund" - this is a seperate fund which comes from all my little bits and bobs, eBay sales etc. Originally the plan was to save up a nice little bit extra and have a splurge on an exotic holiday.

I have now decided Im not that bothered about a flash cruise I will instead have a few mini breaks this year. I can't face a big holiday on my own just yet, I think it would just make me miss my husband even more.

So, rather than let the money languish I have decided to have a little flutter with it, rather than my usual safe low interest accounts.

Im not prepared to take a trip to the races or a fling at the casino level of risk but I'm prepard to take a bit of punt with say £1k.

    Anyone got any bright ideas.....

I was thinking a small amount on peer to peer, maybe a few shares.....

Hi LL - the minute you said a flutter, I started thinking of ratesetter - it does sound one of the good ones. Or a company bond? Waitrose just voted the top supermarket yet again :)
