Could you perhaps try leaving some motivational/money management books lying around - oh so casually.;)

I bought my son a few books and he read and digested them and is now a changed man.

Does he have a particular dream or goal? Something relatively short term, that requires saving towards. Short term treats and rewards might help him to acquire more thrifty habits.

Although I definitely have a long term goal in view I do allow myself a few treats and a little "mad money" every so often. It does help.

Doesn't read but nice idea. :D

Not exactly short term but this did make me laugh and thought I'd share my most recent encounter with the mad money spender of OH....

He is looking for a new job atm and I suggested why doesn't he try and find ways to make money running a business? He basicly said but what would I do? I thought about it for 30 seconds and remembed he once said he wanted to be a man with a van.... (I guess it slipped out with no intital thought :( )

So my OH nearly 21, recently crashed our car and wrote it off about 2 months ago...spent all night on the computer in a total hyper mood planning his business...

Comes back to me, says I need a 6,500 loan, I can pay it off at £xxx amount for 7 years so I can afford it! (can't remember exact figure but was about £130-£200 or something)

So I say...ok what for? ....OH : Well £1500 for the van, and £5000 for insurance.

Can anyone else see what he failed to see and I had to very very gently break it to him that this wasn't going to work.... :o

Saying that this morning he decided to put £30 a month away for our hoilday in May 14 so thats a start I guess :-) I think I am having a good affect on him just going to take a looong time lol

Thanks for the info LL, extremely helpful as always! :)
My MB doesn't really do much beyond resi and BTL so will have to research new brokers! The rates offered to you seem pretty reasonable to me(no escaping those pesky arrangement fees these days unfortunately!) and depending on the project I'd hope to be flipped within around 16wks. I'm looking forward to tying things up on this one and on with the next :)

Wow! Sounds like you're going to be super busy, great opportunities afoot! :) I'm 100% sure that you will make each of your projects a great success, there's nothing like that feeling of turning of turning the ugly duckling into the swan! Especially when all who know you start to question your sanity when they pop around to have a look at the new place... Nice to see their faces again when it's transformed into a des res!

Sounds like a great idea the bungalow, I think if you can get away from the construction work then do! So far I've lived in my projects and it can get a little trying at times when you're not sure whether to clean up or knock another wall down! Probably more motivating getting away from the Reno and starting afresh the following day. Nice bonus also being so close to your OH bless him.

I shall be checking back to see how you're getting on but in the meantime wishing you all the very best with your exciting adventures, take care :)

Hey everyone, im slowly crawling back out into the real world.
Ive started going back to my bootcamps twice a week (I was doing 4 bootcamps, 2 boxing) not feeling confident enough to do the boxing yet but the guy that runs it has been so supportive & my first session back, as I was leaving, he very quietly said 'don't give up' as I walked past. Those 3 words basically dragged me back up enough to know I can start again.
Ive started reading 'get off your !!!!' by brad burton & will soon be onto Get off your !!!! 2. Its not your usual happy clappy. Its funny, its very ME and everything he says seems to be things I already think or want to do but haven't been brave enough/confident enough.
In the past few days ive arranged 3 interviews for apprentices, cancelled a couple of jobs that were causing me stress or that I knew would cause stress (im self employed so need to start realising I get to choose to stay away from stressful work)
Im awaiting reply from college for an interior design course, am booked onto a media training course, have talked to someone re: franchising my biz & also just bringing my biz up a notch or 2,
Ive arranged a team meeting so I can set ground rules for my team & get them more involved in the biz

Great to here about the bungalow LL, sounds like a great idea, as you say, close to OH whilst still being your own person.
great to see my husband isn't the only one who doesn't buy into the dream & insists on plodding along & spending as soon as he earns
trainee millionaire (aka not there yet!)

I would love to be rich too. Frustrates me hearing about how money goes to money.
I remember hearing someone once quote about how when they were poor and unknown they could not afford food or new clothes, but once they became rich and famous they got it all for free.

I am currently unemployed and searching for work. I have a good degree from a good University but this does not seem to be enough to get me in the door anywhere.

I have made about £50k profit in the past 2 years from gambling and hope to keep my winning streak going while looking for work. 5% down, 95% go till I hit the big £1,000,000!

I wrote this a long time ago! It feels like a lot has changed but when I take a step back very little has. I have been employed in a job that didn't do much for me so recently left.

I am now looking to do new things and constantly improving my skill set. I will hopefully be getting further qualifications while I work on side projects.

In liquid terms I am about 17% of the way there, throw in some long term investments I am 20% of the way to a million. My only debt is student loans which for the time being I want to keep that way.

I started this quest at 23 and am now 25 and would like to reach it at some point in the distant future. It seems like a great milestone but I fear by the time I have reached it, inflation will have made it just another arbitrary number and there will be a new thread on here about people younger than me chasing 10 million!

Definitely, but you have to have something to aim for. Journey of a thousand miles, etc. etc.
  • Managed to make the equivalent of about three hundred quid by selling things at a flea market at the weekend.

    I now have:

An extra 300 towards my million.
    Less clutter.
    More shelf space.
An easier job dusting the shelves.
More motivation to make that million from looking at the shelf space now cleared and imagining it filled with wads of cash and bags of coins, Scrooge McDuck style.

I'm getting into positive thinking in a big way.

    Good luck all.

    Good morning all

I'm still in the land of the living - just. Extremely busy but so far it's all paying out money and not actually making any more. Ah well - you have to speculate to accumulate, and all that.

Have been staying at my father's house and running back and forth to DS1's house. Have now moved backed in with DS1 so today is catch up day.

I have viewed my soon to be mine little bungalow and take possession arsund the 20th September with a view to moving in by the end of september, so I can get settled and cosy before the winter sets in. OH is chuffed to bits. I even managed to haggle the rent down - very MSE:rotfl:

It will definitely make my life a bit less chaotic. Less travelling, more time with OH and I get away from the building and renovation works.

DS2 and I have walked away from our proposed purchase. Far too much work and the Vendors were unrealistic and wouldn't budge on their purchase price.

We have decided to buy my sister's little house which is on the same street. Slightly smaller but in better nick, better views of the park and residents only parking. I think this will be a much better bet from an investment and resale point of view.

Glad to hear you are feeling better Tink, you are right to ditch the stressful jobs. Life is just too short to take on a load of unnecessary stress. My aim from now on is to work from a place of calm, quiet and peace - hence the bungalow. Serenity is my goal, along with that £1m of course........The design course and media courses sound like fun.

I have been teaching my son how to repoint brick this week. He's going to be fine.

Shark - you sound like you are making good progress. £10m - why not, aim high and if you only get half way there then that's a cool £5m.

moneysavingtomcat - well done on the decluttering, £300 is a cracking start. I so need to have a major declutter, but am waiting till I can get a bric a brac stall and hopefully make some money from it. I did it a couple of years ago and made £1100. I can't believe how much has piled up again. I'm snowed under with "stuff". I think I need to join "Hoarders Anonymous". And that's just mine. I also have my parent's lifetimes of hoarding to tackle.

    Right time to crack on.....

Today I finally got my act together and made a start on sorting out some bric a brac to sell. Took some items to a local auction house for the next sale. Valued at £60 to £80 - I paid £15 so hopefully a nice little profit there (assuming they sell of course). Not a fortune but every little helps;)

I really ought to do a couple of car boot sales before it gets too cold. I have a small mountain of er hem "treasures". I also have a stack of books but so far can't get any takers......I might end up putting them on the log burner at this rate. At least it would be cheap fuel.......

Hope you are all well and working towards your goals.
