    Yes, but ..

I would be most grateful indeed if you would be so kind as to send
me £2.70 to cover the excess postal cost.

They are asking nicely, not demanding and it is only £2.70

Maybe no legal obligation to pay it, but I for one certainly would.

I think they were polite enough.. however if the listing stated a postage price and said nothing about the possibility of excess after going to PO you dont have to pay.

TBH I dont know what id do.. If I was the seller id jst learn from my mistake and NOT request the extra.

Totally agree, you will learn as time goes by how much items cost when posting, If Ive ever over charged someone, I always let them know and give a refund (not many sellers do that) If Ive undercut myself, learn from it, and the buyer will think they've had a bargain if they ever check the postage costs.

If they've stated in the description the cost, then thats all you should pay.

It's upto you really. Yes they are asking very nicely and it is only £2.70 but, I think most sellers realise that if you undercharge in postage it is your mistake and you have to live with it.

We have undercharged once and didn't ask the buyer for extra - even though we could have done because he was an international buyer. Never undercharged again!

Incidentally if anyone is interested I found a price calculator on Royal mail and find it quite helpful...Sorry its a long link

  • In this particular case I think I'd pay it. I've got an item on Ebay at the moment. I haven't actually underestimated the postage costs, but I have now realised it's just too big to lug to a post office. As it's a quite a high value item I've said that I'll charge the stated parcel post and pay the extra to have it picked up by Parcelforce. By the way, anyone lucky enough to get an X Rocker from Argos or anywhere else should probably consider putting it on Ebay - lots of interest, very few around. It's much bigger than you imagine though !

Why didn't she just buy one of the extra large mailing bags from the Post Office to put the item in? It would be cheaper than the brown paper, let alone a box.

I would never ask for extra payment on postage...

  • Well sorry but there is no way as a seller would I have the gall to ask my buyer to pay for the extra postage. He/she should of considered how it was going to be packed before setting the P+P cost on the auction page. What happens if you refuse to pay?
I'm afraid to say that yes it's only £2.70 but I still wouldn't pay. JMO

  • just had another thought, what if the item doesnt arrive (lost in post) then as far as Ebay and paypal are concerned you only paid the first amount, not the extra postage. Leaves you a bit open for further problems.

With my recent luck with e-bay, this is very likely to happen

I wouldn't worry unduly, at worst you'd be out of pocket by £2.70.

I bought a book a few weeks ago, they got the postage wrong and it cost them probably a quid more than I paid, the Seller did not ask me for more and if they had asked I would not have paid the extra.
Sorry but if they make a mistake in postage its their fault and not mine as a buyer, thats my view anyways.
I would agree - as a seller, if I have got postage wrong it has been my loss!!!
