Is this a bit cheeky?

Hi

I just bought a ski suit for my wife on ebay last night and paid the agreed amount via paypal this morning. I've just received the following email

Quote

I am ready to send the above item that you won on Ebay. I was going to wrap
the suit up in brown paper but it was far too bulky and not very secure. I
will place the suit in a small cardboard box and I will include a matching
headband. When I went to the PO the cheapest postal rate was £7.70. That is
standard parcel rate which also has free insurance as it is too heavy for
First Class. The cost will appear on the post label which you will view on
arrival. I would be most grateful indeed if you would be so kind as to send
me £2.70 to cover the excess postal cost. This can be done via Paypal by
clicking 'send money' and choosing member HYPERLINK
"mailto:xxxx@xxxxxxxxxx.co.uk"xxx@xxxxxxxx.co.uk .

I am extremely sorry about this but the suit does need packing well.

Yours thankfully,

Nicola

What do you all think about paying the excess?

Thanks

I think they were polite enough.. however if the listing stated a postage price and said nothing about the possibility of excess after going to PO you dont have to pay.

TBH I dont know what id do.. If I was the seller id jst learn from my mistake and NOT request the extra.

Thanks for the quick response. I was going to, just thought I'd run it past someone more knowledgable than me.
  • You can look at it in 2 ways.

It was a genuine mistake, you've got a bargain so pay the extra.

    or

It was a genuine mistake but it was their mistake so they should cover it.

Was the P&P costs listed on the auction?

I wouldnt, there are a hell of a lot of sellers (me included in the past) that have mis-priced the postage and had to absorb the cost.

If they had over-charged you by £2.70 do you think you would get a refund ???

They probably just trying their luck,

Yes they were listed, and yes I think it was a genuine mistake

I think I would, nice email etc.

Seller is looking after your interests, if you don't you will get it stuffed in a bag to reduce weight. Small comment might be appropriate that you are a little surprised but in this case you are willing to pay it.
  • Thanks all, and thanks for your quick replies. I'm going to pay her as she is going to include a matching headband for my trouble, however, I think that (as some one else has stated) by the time she has driven to the post office twice, she will have spent thatmuch in petrol

    Thanks again

How I wish people would not lie!! This really annoys me!

1>>>Yes there will be a (more expensive) first class option!

2>>> 7.70 is standard parcel wieight between 2 and 4 kilos. There is no more insurance on that, than 1st class ( 32 quid max compensation).

You would need to pay another quid (someone please tell me how to make my quid sign work, it looks like this #) to insure it up to 100 quid.

To the OP would agree with what others have posted, I am just here to clarify the facts!!!

Well better get back to work (at the front line of parcels and cards!! )
keep smiling at the PO !
