I think the seller means it was too heavy for 2nd class.
mah_jong, try setting your keyboard to UK English in control panel. My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j0 -

(Assuming you have Windows XP) go to Control Panel, Regional & Language Options, Languages, Details, and set English (UK) as default, removing the English (US) you have there.0 -

Mine did that after I visited this site last week! The keyboard changed to USA layout, but only on Internet Explorer, everything else (Word etc.) was fine. I spent an hour fiddling with language settings both for IE and the control panel before thinking "Bu**er this, I'll try rebooting it and if that doesn't work it'll be System Restore."
The reboot fixed it, thankfully, so try that. Hasn't happened since.

sellers are allowed to ask for extra to cover unexpected postage costs, so they are not doing anything wrong.
if i were you i'd pay, like they say you'll have a postal label which will show the cost and if they've overcharged hit them with a neg!0 -

Actually, they're not. But on this occasion I'd probably let it go, if it were me.My TV is broken!

At the bottom of your listing, just before clicking on the submit button ebay have this...
"If you specify Postage Costs for this item, you may reasonably increase Postage Costs to cover increased costs for international delivery or for requested additional services. Both you and the buyer must agree to both the price of the item and the increased Shipping Costs before any contract may be consummated."
As the OP is not international (I presume) and they have not asked for additional services I would suggest the seller can't ask for the additional postage.

I bought a book a few weeks ago, they got the postage wrong and it cost them probably a quid more than I paid, the Seller did not ask me for more and if they had asked I would not have paid the extra.
Sorry but if they make a mistake in postage its their fault and not mine as a buyer, thats my view anyways.0 -
I sold a xmas tree on ebay, I forgot to put the transformer in when I weighed it, hence when I put that in, the postage went up considerably.
I wouldn't have dreamed of asking the buyer to pay the extra, the mistake was mine. I paid it & I lost out.
I think they are VERY CHEEKY asking, no matter how nicely they put it.
