    Thanks for all the replies!
    Still havent decided what to get him but i definietly have some good ideas now...
    The £40/50 was just the max i, prepared to spend, but obviously i would spend less if i find something.
    Btw, I dont have family nearby to buy for, and he's not only my friend's husband, but I've been going through a tough time recently and he's been a friend to me as well. And 40 is one of the big one's ;-)
    ** i didn't lose my mind, i sold it on ebay **

    Hi Minky,

    Blimey! I REALLY sympathise with your plight!! I love choosing presents for people. I also love my brother dearly - but he is almost IMPOSSIBLE to buy gifts for!

    Any suggestions are met with "Dunno... vouchers...?" Not helpful. However, I have, on many occasions, found the following website (and I don't work for them, so no conflict of interest...;)) VERY helpful: http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/.

    Their range of quirky gifts is second-to-none and I have always found their deliveries and customer-service to be faultless. The site also offers a unique gift-finder option, so ideal if your intended recipient is a party animal OR a miserable git!

    In the past, I've bought from them:
    http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/racing-grannies/index.html - for my brother's M-in-Law, who has become a family friend since the wedding;
    http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/lavnav/index.html - for my sister-in-law, when she was on maternity leave and my brother started working nights (they're both medical professionals);
    http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/usb-humping-dog/index.html - for work secret-Santa;
    http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/electronics/digital-camera-accessories/joby-gorilla-pod-slr-tripod/10233027.html - for my brother's birthday (photography is his hobby).

    I also got this http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/rainbow-in-my-room/index.html for my little nephew who, as a tot (he's now nearly 6), had lots of trouble getting to sleep. According to my sister-in-law the rainbow lights, along with a CD of nephew's favourite tunes, really helped him to chill out and get off to sleep.

    They also have TONS of stuff for a lively 40-year-old blokey!

    Whichever gift option you decide to go with, good luck, and I'm sure he'll love it!

    And, whatever the gift, a few words inside the card to say what you've already expressed here - i.e. along the lines of: "I've been going through a tough time recently and you've really been a friend to me. Thank you." - will probably be the best gift of all.

    Hope this helps.

    xx

    Got this idea from an item in amazon.com: A gift basket containing nostalgic things from the time he was born.
  • Thanks for this thread, its not only given me some great ideas for a 40th male present too but also for two father's day presents. Result, thanks!

    Hamper of retro sweeties? I did this recently for a 40th, got kilner jars from poundstretcher, basket from homebase, cellophane from the florist (though ebay is waaay cheaper) Filled the jars with bon bons, frying pan lollies, drumstick lollies, m&ms, jelly babies etc, sat them on brightly coloured crepe paper (pound shop). Tucked some scottish fudge, tablet and toffee round the jars as they are English and we're Scots and wrapped them in the cellophane to a big point topped with sparkly bow and ribbon. They went down really well.

    We got various bottles of whisky for a friend who likes it.
    It is mine coming up so I need to start thinking as I am sure family will start asking what I would like soon.
