Crux of this being......more wealthy students buying their places at university = Less student places available on merit.

Elitism cometh again.

What is the problem with elitism, do you prefer mediocrity?

won't this actually devalue the product?

a degree shouldn't be a status symbol like a handbag where the cost creates a sense of elitism. it should be achieved on academic / educational merit.

if rich kids can just pay their way into the best courses then the entrance criteria no longer becomes critical. how is an employer supposed to know which students got grade admissions and which got pay packet admissions?

maybe they can even pay extra to get a first?:D

  • It does not matter which party will be voted in, They are just puppets on a string, There is a small committee of elitists who pull the strings, In my opinion of course ;-)

i don't think cameron and his ilk are necessarily malicious i think they just don't get it. they see nothing wrong with the elitist networks that maintain the status quo (as demonstrated by him undermining clegg by saying he would continue to give internships to his neighbours kids).

they don't see that educating someone to their full capacity is an advantage to society as a whole not just the individual involved. likewise they don't see that lost potential due to financial background is a loss to all of us.

I think that the term elitism was being misused - referring to the wealthy as opposed to the able. Elitism would mean selecting according to grades, not parental income. In fact the two things are slightly connected as the wealthy can buy their children education which throws resources at them to enhance their grades. Sometimes things go awry at University though when the wealthy no longer get the spoonfeeding that they had at school.

Ugh, no, as the BBC report states in its 3rd paragraph anyone paying the market rate for a degree will free up a place for a subsidised place by not being subsidised themselves!

Why should foreign students be allowed to buy a place at an English university but British students be banned from the same option? The UK government would lose such a battle in the European courts so this not only saves the taxpayer money but also stops treating British students as 2nd class citizens and gives them equality with overseas students.
