VAT on mobile contracts

I'm about to renew or start a new mobile contract and am considering my options. Im shopping around and thought 1 important this is to find out who charges VAT "ABOVE" agreed contract cost.

EG. I am currently with orange on a £30 pm contract and get charged £36 per month. But my wife is with o2 on exactly the same £30 pm contract and only gets charged £30

My question is: Does anyone know what companies charge VAT above the contract price and who doesnt?

I think it depends upon what type of phone you get.

Blackberrys are mainly aimed at the business user and so these tarrifs are usually offered excluding VAT (ie, VAT added on top afterwards). Vodafone adverts in the paper for BB's do this all time and quite misleading.

From an advertising perspective a product aimed at the consumer/retail is supposed to be VAT inclusive, whereas adverts aimed at other businesses don't have to have VAT included in the price.
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.

I think only business tariffs are quoted without VAT.

Both mine and my wifes contracts are personal but the orange one adds VAT ontop of the £30 and O2 doesn't

All prices for personal contracts on both Orange and O2 websites include VAT

Just because they are different amounts for similar bundles/phones (assuming they are) has nothing to do with VAT - they are on different networks and different networks charge different tariffs. As has been said, VAT is always included for personal contracts and usually not included for business contracts - the same as any other product.

No, My orange contract was an agreed £30 a month 2 year personal contract. It comes in at £36 each month.

My wifes is an agreed £30 a month o2 personal contract. It comes in at £30 each month.

If you agreed to pay £30 a month, then disagree to pay them £36!

Then if you have it in writing you can challenge what you're paying. A lot depends on where you got it from; there are rogue dealers who phone existing customers up and offer contracts which appear to be personal but which are not. VAT must always be clearly shown on each bill in any case.

Please give a breakdown of your talkplan as listed on your bill, and any extras.

Sounds like you have a £5 data bolt-on and itemised billing which cost extra?

A £30 contract with Orange will be £30. Otherwise it would be a £36 contract, wouldn't it? :rotfl:
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂
