Itunes - is it essential?

As others have mentioned, there are plenty of other options if you're not a fan of iTunes. But one thing I would point out - since this is for your daughter rather than for you. iTunes is very simple and intuitive for non-techie types (my mum can use it!) so if your daughter is less technical/critical with her software than you are I would recommend she use that.

I'd also suggest starting off with itunes. I've tried just about every alternative and I haven't found any as easy to use as Itunes.
I would suggest using Itunes to begin with and then if necessary moving to another system. It'll be much easier to change to an alternative to Itunes after finding out where Itunes is lacking and what features you particularly need.0 -
that's one reason i don't like Ipods. I prefer to just copy and paste my music onto my cheapo mp3 player.0

I recently bought a dirt-cheap mp3 player off ebay (an unbranded one that is sometimes known as an s1mp3 - can't get more basic)scheming_gypsy wrote:that's one reason i don't like Ipods. I prefer to just copy and paste my music onto my cheapo mp3 player.
I have to admit I find it really refreshing to use: no Itunes, no syncing, it has an FM radio and it's so cheap I don't care about losing it - I'm not constantly checking where it is like I am with my Ipod.

And don't forget that to get gapless playback (the feature that sets the iPod apart for me) then you've got to use iTunes. Totally agree with sra that it is by far the most user friendly out of everything else mentioned above. I can't see the harm in trying them all and choosing whichever you like but I feel I know the answer.;)Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0

From OP - Thanks for all the suggestions, I had a look at Yamipod and it custard pie'd me straight away so ITunes might be the lesser of 2 evils. I will try to get on with it for now and bow graciously to the 'great Apple'. Thanks again..... ChristyA bargain is something you don't need at a price you can't resist.0

You should be able to copy your tracks across using a pen drive but it may depend on if the tracks have DRM protection, if they have been purchased though iTunes. I detest DRM an do not use iTunes. Yamipod will allow you to manage your ripped music to/from your lappy to your new toy. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

What is wrong with just using the bundled Windows Media Player? It's simple to use and you already have it installed.0
