Ken Clarke. I just wish he was labour.

...and Gordon's only failing was not re-regulating after the tories released the lunatics in the asylum.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

'Gordon's only failing...' where've you been the last 3 years? What about his one trillion pounds worth of debt we've all got to pay?

The crash in the UK was predominantly caused by the irresponsible behaviour of the investment banks. Gordon Brown has publicly acknowledged that he should have introduced more robust regulation to curtail this activity. The speed of deregulation accelerated under the tories, prior to 1997.
The actions of Gordon Brown immediately after the crash have been internationally recognised have having prevented the UK economy from completely imploding.

No, no, no, you're wrong. The economy was running away from him prior to the banking crisis in 2008, we were already nearly 600b in debt and the debt was rising fast. The banking crisis didn't help but wasn't the cause. What he and his advisors did in the banking crisis was the right thing to do but I can't belive any of that came from him more like from Darling and his co-horts and not Gormless Brown. But your comments are right about what action they took but not about the cause of the huge debt we're all in. Brown was rubbish as a PM and a Chancellor.

I mistook you for someone else

I thought you were from that Jilted John song

The Jilted John song was where the name Gordon the Moron came from originally though it did fit Mr Brown rather well !

  • Why, oh why, Didn't Gordon stay as Chancellor instead of aspiring to something of which he was not capable? That way we would still have retained our good NHS, our adequate police force, our bus services, our public open spaces, and pensioners would not have had the triple-wammy of CPI (instead of RPI), tax allowances reduced by far less than everybody else and a reduction in winter fuel allowance.

Like others I can't believe anyone could vote for the man who told the world he was about to flood the gold market, thereby deflating it's value prior to selling the nations reserves!!!
Which begs the question (or topic for a poll) 'Should one have to pass a competency test in order to be able to vote?'

Absolutely astonishing that 2 of the worst possible candidates received the most votes. Obviously voters still believe in the "free lunch". Time to plan my departure from the UK!

In reply to Yorkshireman - Brown - totally incompetent as Chancellor too! Who was going to pay for his excesses?

It's amazing to me how people give Gordon Brown all the credit for 1997 - 2006, when the world economic conditions were relatively benign (excluding 2003 when we would have had a short recession had we not spent billions extra on the public sector to support GDP), but none of the blame for what followed.....

The truth is that Brown squandered the opportunity of a generation to sort this country's finances out - anyone remember the extra cash from windfall tax, 3G mobile phone licences, selling gold reserves etc?? Instead, we're left with a mountain of debt which we are adding to hour by hour, day by day as the Government still spends more than it can afford...

In days gone by, Brown would be convicted of treason and his head put on a spike on London Bridge as a warning to others - but still people want him to be back in charge!! Mental!!
