so we have been here 5 1/2 weeks! wow how time flies.
at the end in the uk it was frantic to say the least, we completed on our house sale - the money came through - then we were in a major panic, allocating money to various places.
hilarious when the bank - who wouldnt allow me a payment card [and still dont] decided that we had so much in our account, they would get the private banking people to ring up! would we like to change to private banking? hmm would we? um no. they asked us what our plans were for the money, my hubby said hmmm let me think, how about getting it away from you as quickly as possible? OH, they said but it will be much safer in our private banking account! .. hmm said hubby.. you mean that other accounts arent safe????!!!!! omg does the general public know that bank accounts arent safe unless they are in private banking... needless to say it was not a very constructive conversation.

money through, bills paid, arrangements met, we left, carrying 13500 in cash through LHR! hmm we were stopped. funny eh! why did we have so much cash on us, we were asked? well we had to pay our rent deposit, 1st months rent etc etc and we had no bank account yet in fr. we were let through, no problem. scary though carrying that much money!

took delivery of rented house, hire car, opened a super bank account with really helpful people, !!!!! shocked.. they even greet us as we walk into their branch now and whisk us away to their office to just generally suck up to us :) we like this! considering for llloyds in uk, we werent really welcome through the front door of our branch, they preferred us to enter after dark and in disguise!

    sun shines!

now onwards to buying cars, hmm traditionally we make bad, big mistakes with cars, favouring the HP agreement, the loan, the top up loan and any other means possible. however now, our plan is 1 rough and ready car and one family car. we locate said rough and ready car, purchase for 2600 euro, paid in full :) we smile joyfully at our achievement. then the clouds gather as hubby said " lets just pop into the peugeot dealer! hmm i suppose. yeah right. where as normally i would skip along eagerly wanting a brand new shiney car... these days a different story... we get into the showroom, salesman slides up.. how can we help you [take ur money] today? we want a super 7 seater say hubby! of course, let me show you our top of the range 33000 euro model! at this point i feel sick and think omg i didnt go through all that pain to start this over again. we have test drive of super car and love it. but... i say to hubby ... this is wrong, we will not do this, i do not want this anymore, i am not that person anymore. we must leave now. we leave, hubby with confused face on. me feeling sick.
search for car continues... then we find a garage, a car that meets our criteria and price and we pay 14500 euro for a lovely car, no hp no loan no nothing just own the car out right :) smiles all round.

today i went out around the shops in the retail centre nearby, omg lovely things.. like really lovely things.. alll the things i want and more... but.... but ... i just could not bring myself to part with a penny...! am i ill? what is wrong with me? nothing at all - i have learnt control. a bitter lesson but finally learnt. i will wait till we get our house, then i will buy wisely and within control, until then i will not fritter away the cash and i will sleep at night.

saying all this though.. i thought the relief would be instant of no debt and having money in various accounts.. but it isnt.. why is that?

anyway... i've typed enough for now xx

"i will wait till we get our house, then i will buy wisely and within control, until then i will not fritter away the cash"

That sounds like a good plan to me. Very good. Occasional treats, but not all the time. Buying cars new is like throwing money down the drain, so what you are doing just sounds sensible to me.

" we leave, hubby with confused face on." I don't understand that. Was he looking to spend big bucks to please you, or has the penny still not dropped for him?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

yeah chev.. its the house... cant even bear to unpack or tidy up... although today perhaps i might...

im still a little bit in the zone of taking kids to school then going back to bed to blot it out :( but overall im better, was thinking last night how the financial situation is miles better and that we actually HAD money! when u spend a couple of years being fixated about how to pay the bills and counting down the money as it runs out each month its very hard to get mentally out of that feeling.... i mostly forget each day that we have money if we want it... but infact i would rather keep our money and put it towards a lovely house in about a years time.

have a good day all.. sun is shining here xx

Me thinks you need to still have a talk with your OH. I guess he didn't see all the stress that you had to go through to get to this debt free point. If you are up to it, maybe you should make him read your OLD diary, to see how hard you worked to get to this point. I would have been flipping livid if my OH had done that to me....

I want a job that is less than an hour driving away from my house! Are you listening universe?
  • I know how you feel, MrsC. I was poor for many years and now although I have a couple of thousand put by and a reasonable salary, I still shop in charity shops and Matalan. My ex would spend and spend with nothing to show for it - never again. You should have a word, methinks.
