Just found this site which might help sorting out running costs and tax http://www.sust-it.net/miles-per-gallon-mpg.php?type=all&manufacturer=ford&engine=1.8

VW Lupo SDI - Ultra high MPG, not good performance.
VW Lupo TDI - Pretty high MPG, much better performance.

Both £30 tax a go, both very reliable, and now very affordable.

Lots of overpriced tat being sold because the tax is cheap.

    Not tat, just tiny cars.

And there are plenty of tiny cars available, both Petrol & Diesel. As you get on to larger cars, the petrol-engined ones drop out.

    Personally, I would steer-clear of a 5-6 yo hybrid.

I drive a 10-plate, Citroen C4 1.6 HDi EGS 110bhp. This is also £30 per year road tax, but it's a full-sized car with 5 proper seats and although nothing special on 0-60, it's quite sporty at motorway pickup speeds. I've had several low-emission diesels now, and this is the best compromise between economy & performance so far.

You might also want to look at C3s and DS3s. I've heard that the DS3 with the 110bhp diesel is a bit of an animal, although I've not driven one. IIRC, all the DS3 diesels have always been £30 road tax or less.

The Renault 1.5 dCi 105 bhp engine is also very good, though not all Meganes with this engine of the age required are £30 road tax.

OP - Unless you do huge mileages on a company car, don't pay too much attention to tax and mpg, and focus more on total cost of ownership. As said above, it could take you years to make back the difference in annual tax, or a few mpg.

This thread was started in 2011, hopefully they have found a suitable car by now!
