Used cars with £30 road tax - upto 6 yrs old

It seemsto me that in the grand scheme of things (insurance, fuel, maintanance) road tax on anything sensible is not the most important?
For example if you got a band D £95/year car instead you'd spend £65/year more, if the car was sat £650 less expensive to buy or insure you'd already break even!
And that's coming form somebody with a tax excampt car (fuel cost & relative green-ness were more of a consideration than road tax)0 -
We have a Corsa 1.3cddti ecoflex five door. Nice little car for what it is. As a previous poster has said you 3 across the back is limited but OK for shorter journeys.
Chose it over a VAG variant didn't fancy the 3 cylinders reportedly a bit harsh.
The Clio was a strong contender, good price new and probably not the strongest residuals. Good engine (1.5d) but I have a relative and friends who have suffered because of the gizzmos and electronics on their megane scenics.
Guess it also depends on whether you are passionate about petrol or diesel as that will limit/expand choice.
Also as a previous poster has said need to consider the TCO in that you may get a cheaper car but with a higher VED. I guess the only issue here is whether HMRC decide to rachet up VED disproportionately on "dirtier" cars."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Honda Civic IMA. Economy of a very small car, drive of a luxury car.0

Aren't you buying a bit of legacy minefield with the IMA?
Maintenance and depreciation wise?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Depreciation wise it holds its value better than a petrol Civic.
The IMA system has a 80,000 mile 8 year warranty. In the time I had mine I never had a single problem. Honda's are generally pretty reliable.0 -

Fair play.
I guess it is what happens when the batteries start to fade
Not knocking either this or the Prius they are steps forward and by reputable manufacturers no doubt working on a replacement.
In general terms the cost, pollution and use of precious metals (no doubt part recoverable for a price) making the battery packs doesn't really help, in the long term, for mass replacement of what we have today.
We just seem to be woefully behind where we should be in developing scalable alternatives."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I've got a '57 Fiesta 1.6 tdci which fits into this tax bracket. Nippy enough for town and motorway travel and I get about 450 miles on a full tank of diesel which is about £53LBM: 22.12.2010 :j Self-managed DMP start 29.1.2011DMP Mutual Support Thread No: 4130
