I just won't buy cars that need stupid, expensive cart-wheel tyres in the first place :D

Those 205/55/16s are about as far as I am prepared to go. I've been shocked at the prices of those tyres. What exactly was wrong with Vectra-sized cars with 185/65/15 tyres in the first place?

Higher profile arent as good in the corners.

Hmmm. What was it you were saying about grip and tolerating eco-tyres as long as you work within their limits?

Higher profile tyres also tend to give the driver more warning before letting go.

Perhaps (really?), but the steering isn't as precise.

IME yes -- the squirming in itself provides the necessary feedback.

    Sorry but you're wrong there.

    No , i'm not.

Most Police Forces have a policy of replacing in axle paurs.

In these times of financial constraints some forces have stopped this policy for non response cars. In other words the Area cars, Traffic cars and ARV's will be axle sets. Pandas are not to be used in pursuits or high speed response so now soke forces just replace the punctured tyre. It may surprise somebody that obviously knows everything that some Police Forces do maintain their vehicles to a very high standard, for example discs and pads are treated as a set. When the pads meed done the discs are renewed aswell.

There is one place where the Police, Fire and Ambulance services won't cut corners and that is brakes and tyres. Interior things, aircon and bodywork yes, but not wheels and tyres.

Hasn't this just summed up the arguments over new / second hand tyres?
Tyres judged not good enough for the above services, being bought by people buying second hand.

p.s. Did you meant brakes and tyres?

You're still talking crap. Financial constraints have nothing to do with the replacement of tyres on police cars as the police get their tyres fee. Yet still you think you are the forum expert on all the emergency services. Most police vehicles will never see a main dealer other than for warranty work.

Do you seriously think the police get there tyres free!

Are you just being stupid or do you believe what yiu post.

And after a decade working for the emergency services i think i am more than qualified. Also the fact that i used to work with the brother of the foreman at Lewisham Police garage gives me extra insight. Or do you also know more than the bloke that actually does the work.

Sometimes the drivel you post surprises even me, and i thought i had seen it all.

I buy used tyres from scrapyards on the rims, when they are available, they have become rather scarce for me in recent months. When you buy on the rims you save on fitting.

I buy a pair of vauxhall 175,65,14s for £15 others makes/models can be more expensive.

If I were you, I wouldn't buy off t'internet. I'd buy from a garage who sells part worns or remoulds, get some prices and price the budget new tyres aswell, work out which is best value for money.

That website sells my size for £30 a pair and there's fitting on top and you don't know what you are buying.

There will always be people who never want to use used tyres just as there are always people who will only cross a road at a pedestrian crossing, or who stand there and look left, right and left again and wait until they are absolutely certain that there are no cars within half a mile before crossing. At the end of the day it is personal choice. Once you get over the fear factor that you have been infected with since you were a child you may find that it's no big deal. I have used used tyres for the last 20 years with no problems.

I know they do but looks like you're out of touch. They only pay for fitting and balancing. A decade with the LAS makes you an expert in the running of the police how?
