Buying Used Tyres
Options
I was looking for two new tyres for my car and wondered if buying used tyres would be a good idea or if its just a safety risk?
http://gogreentyres.com/ had two tyres for £30 for my car - anyone used them before? Its so cheap it makes me worry

I can't say tyres is something I would generally try and scrimp on to be completely honest. Down to a person's own judgement though I suppose.:cool:0

£30 isn't cheap for a pair of secondhand tyres (not in the sizes they sell anyway), and for all you know you could end up with 2 boots that only have 2mm of tread left on them.
Add to the fact you have to pay someone to take your old tyre off, dispose of it (that costs), fit the new tyre, fit a new valve and balance it all up......you might as well buy new unless you intend to sell the car.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
I have bought tyres on Gumtree and ebay before. It's fine as long as you check they arent really old. There should be a DOT code on the sidewall and the last 4 digits tell you when the tyre was made. Try to get tyres that are as new as possible, try to avoid tyres over 6 years old.0

I have bought used tyres in the past on Ebay but just because they were run flats and new ones were £130+ each. I got a few with 6mm for £30, and one with 7mm for £10 and free collection
As long as they are a good make, pressure tested and have not been repaired they should be ok.
When you take it to get fitted they will check it anyway and I usually signed the receipt which had noted that they fitted a used tyre as a 'disclaimer' if anything happened.0 -

Depends how much tread they have and what brand they are. Also some places do free fitting.0 -
Tyres are the only point of contact your car has with the road and they play an important part in braking also.
I've used part worn tyres reluctantly before, but only when they were nearly new (i.e. 6-7mm thread depth and of a decent brand).
That company makes no reference to the tyre brands, but do mention that both tyres may not have equally worn so you could end up with one that has 4mm thread, and the other with 6mm. They could also have been puncture repaired e.t.c according to their t's and c's.
Personally, i'd buy new from someone like mytyres.net / camskill tyres / blackcircles. You can buy a set of Falken's, Avon's or Barums (which are all generally half decent) for a sensible price if you shop around.0 -

I hope I don't end up buying a car off you.0 -
Lots of reports in the car mags tyres imported from otehr countries who have stricter rules on tyres.
They ran some on a machine that simulated motorway speeds. Several tyres failed & shredded on the
machine. You have no idea how they have been treated. Some will be from puncture repairs where the
garage have told the driver they cannnot repair as the hole is too close to the edge. Then sell them new
tyres. Repair the tyre and sell it on or keep it for themselves.
I would rather get new budget brands than risk 2nd hand part worn ones.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Every car I've ever bought came with pre worn tyres.
Having said that, I don't like the look of that website for them.
There are a few half way decent ones appearing on ebay, and if they're close enough you can go and see the tyres, and get them fitted for a nominal amount. Sold in matching pairs as well, and decent named brands.
I emailed a local(ish) uk supplier tonight though, asking a question, ebay stated the seller wasn't registered in the uk, but was on a foreign ebay website, so the response may not be in english?
So it looks like possibly german, or at least european suppliers are selling direct, but fronting using a local fitter.
They all seem to be tested, free from punctures, etc, 4 or 5mm of tread, so look ok.
I did buy some rims, (with tyres) from a private seller, to use with winter tyres, decent tyre depth, but very odd marks on one. As I wasn't using the tyres, it didn't matter, but it wasn't mentioned at the time, so buyer beware.0 -
Think about it people. How are used tyres sourced ? Not from used vehicles that's for sure because if they are still being used then they wouldn't be being stripped for parts, now would they?0
