I can't see how they can sell an expensive 4x4 to the police for about 1/3 of the retail price either, but they do.
To be honest though whether or not the police are buying their vehicles at a massive discount isn't really relevant to the claim that they receive free tyres for their vehicles.

There's a pretty fundamental difference between selling a vehicle to the police at a third of the price and the ongoing supplying of a fleet of police cars with free tyres whenever they're needed. Goodness knows how many free tyres we're talking for a hundred police vehicles year in, year out. :)

    but they havent...

And you know this for definite from a tyre thats come from mainland Europe how exactly? As wheels are removed at scrapyards when cars come in in this country, you can't even know for certain with tyres from the scrapyard at the end of your own street.

I would expect a decent tyre fitter to examine the inside of every tyre, whether new or used, for signs of hidden damage,]

You need an X-Ray machine to do that. No, I am not kidding - you actually do need an X-Ray machine.

We all know you on MSE as a wise chap, Wig, but surely you weren't risking used tyres from a scrapyard on your taxis??
No, on a taxi you change your tyres at least once every 6 months, I didn't have the time or the inclination to go round scrapyards looking for tyres so often. They were remoulds, (i.e. used tyres) £17 a corner like half the fleet of taxi drivers also used.

On the free tyres issue, you could probably settle this with a freedom of information request from one of these 4 forces.
