I agree shaved legs are silky smooth but by the next day I can fell stubble starting again. I epilate once a week now and can quite happily bare my legs as the re growth is very fine and I have lots of balder patches.
I tried epilating under my arms at the weekend and it was pretty painful so I plucked them! Odd I know, but I grabbed my tweezers and once I started I couldn't stop lol. I'll continue to pluck them for as long as need be until they start growing back finer, then and only then will I try epilating again.
I used to do this! Actually found it less painful then epilating! I don't do this anymore as I really strained my eyes and ended up with horrible eye strain headaches as a result! I did find though that I got longer fuzz free results then epilating and no blood!
Would ideally like to wax but all I seem to get is torn skin and a horrible waxy reisdue which is then painful to remove due to the raw skin. Even created a tear and blood once and never actually ever have removed hair, I must put a whole new meaning to the word rubbish!
Would never go back to epilating under my arms though as no matter how many times I tried it I never managed to stop causing bleeding from the hair being torn out, would leave really odd speckled red dots all over my clothes too. Still prefer waxing for my legs.0 -
Some excellent tips here
I found the best thing to do when I first started epilating (over 2 years ago now) was smother my legs in antiseptic cream after I had done it. Somethimes the red dotty effect isn't ingrown hair but an infected follicle. The antispetic cream calms down any redness.
I don't need to use it now, just exfoliate regularly and use Dove Visible Effect body lotion after epilating. It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey0 -
I did my weekly leg epilating session last night, couldn't be bothered to get in the bath or shower as it was late so did it 'dry' sitting on my bed. It was really easy and NO PAIN!! Couldn't believe it, i'll be sticking to dry epilating from now on.0

Hi All,
Thanks for your replies and idea's. I have just used my epilator on my underarms and can say that this doesn't bother me in the slightest. It doesn't hurt me when I do my legs, it's just that they are never smooth, and no matter how long i leave it to give all of the hairs chance to grown back so i can get them all at the same time sort of thing, I still get regrowth a day or so later, and the bumpy effect on my legs doesn't look or feel very nice.
I think I am guilty of believing the adverts that it will give you smooth silky legs, which in my case, not true. I'm not bothered about doing the epilation but would like hair and stubble and bump free legs for a few days. As I said I've tried exfoliating with body scrubs and exfoliating gloves and moisturising after epilation etc, but must just be me. Must admit, a bit disappointed with the look and feel of them, I'll keep on trying and hopfully as some of you have said, the hair on my legs may get thinner/finer thus making the bumps go down.0 -
Are you epilating under a very good light?
I sit with a desk lamp as well as the led light on my epilator as otherwise I miss more then I get
Also my hairs tend to lie flat and get caught under the skin so even though I exfoliate in the shower near enough daily, I use a pair of dry exfoliating mitts before I start - tends to life a few more
Like you I never get a full week of hair free lump free bottom half of legs but the few hairs that do grow arent noticeable less you are looking that close os Im happy enough to go bare legged0 -

The regrowth you notice might be due to different hairs growing and emerging at different times, as each hair has a 28 day cycle of growth and it's just that you're taking hair out at different times in their growing cycle - hope I'm making sense!!!0 -

Yes I can second this - it does take a good few months to start really noticing the difference. Mine aren't too bad now and I have quite a few bald patches on my lower leg. My skin would be in such bad condition if I just shaved my legs.
Keep at it.:DIt's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey0 -
I agree that epilating does not get the best results - however it is much easier, more convenient and cheaper (after initial cost) than waxing and the regrowth is a lot better than with shaving.
I have a braun silk epil which you can use in the shower, that helps a lot as skin is warm and soft - however I do suffer ingrown hairs if I dont remember to exfoliate and moisturise every day (apart from the day I use it - you mustn't exfoliate immediately before and after ).
Also ingrown hairs are common if you wear tight clothes (like leggings or tight pants) as they press too hard against the skin.
I tried epilating my armpits once and not only did it hurt loads it also must have 'opened' up my pores as it made me really sweaty the next few days!! shaving much easier for pits.Betty B: The Eternal Procrastinator....

I am considering buying an epilator, I have pcos which causes excess hair and I'd like to try something thats longer lasting than shaving! I have read through all your helpful comments and I think this would be good for me, does anyone have any recommendations on the best one to buy!! Thanks in advance0

Hi Emma,
I have a braun Silk-e-pil, or what ever they're called. It's a good brand and does a good job, it has 2 different size epilating heads and a shaver attachment, but as you can see from my posts above, not the results the adverts promised for me just yet, but may take a few more months before I get decent results like the other posters above have said. They have all given me some idea's to think about and I'm sure someone else will post soon to let you know what epilators they use and what results they get with them.0
