I've heard a few people say that too so that sounds like a very good idea, you'll probably find you get very used to and grateful for that little bit of independent movement and not having to ask to be turned all the time when people forget to give enough thought to where they 'park' you.

I went to a restaurant the other day and rested my crutches on the unused side of the table (there were 3 of us) and the waiter asked if I wanted them put away somewhere else, it actually felt like a thump in the stomach with the thought of being without them, trapped in my seat! Again, I didn't realise how I felt about them until that point.

It would drive me mad, people should respect your things. It annoys me when people let their dogs jump up on my mobility scooter and scratch it, or their owners won't ask them to get off it, when I take great pride in keeping it clean and looking new.
