Paid a cheque in using ATM deposit facility

Paid a DVLA cheque in to my local Halifax branch ATM machine on Thursday. Got a deposit receipt (which I have now lost) and then took £30 cash out with a withdrawal receipt (now lost too). The transaction for the cash has shown on my statement but there is no entry or balance change for the cheque.
I have tried calling the telephone banking and they told me to ring the local store. I have tried to ring but no answer and got put through to what must be a Halifax switchboard who said they would get store to ring me back.
Has anyone else ever had cheques not deposit through an ATM before. How do I stand if they have lost it or it's not gone through. It's just a white deposit envelope, how will they know it's mine.
I could do with that money being in my account asap.
Your thoughts ?

I've never had a problem before and I don't carry a pen around with me. In hindsight yes maybe I should have written those details on it but having paid hundreds of cheques in before I didn't expect it.0

On the very few occasions that I've paid cheques in via an ATM, the envelopes provided have had a printed area for you to enter the cheque amount & payee's account number.I've never had a problem before and I don't carry a pen around with me. If it was just a cheque in an envelope with no details, they won't know it's yours.
It will go into a suspense account (if they process it at all) until you sort it out with them.0 -
Don't cheques have the payee's name on?0

And if the bank has 2 or more customers named "J.Smith", "W.Bloggs", etc.?anamenottaken wrote: »Don't cheques have the payee's name on?0 -

Yes - but they could have a number of customers with that name. If it's a common name certainly will.0 -

Are you seriously saying you paid in a cheque with no indication of what account it should be credited to -or was it one of these put your card in and it's supposed to lik the two up ? Must say I thought (though it's a long time since I've deposited to Halifax that way) the deposit envelopes had spaces for you to complete with name and account number ?I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
I never put details on the paying in envelope at the Nationwide.
The machine (alledgedly) prints a number on the envelope as it's taken in, this ties up to the one on the receipt.
I've never had a problem yet.0
