I'm sure anyone who has been hit directly or indirectly by these schemes would agree. Maybe education of youngsters is an answer. Most people now know that emails from Nigeria offering you millions are scams, so putting such schemes under a similar banner might help. The villains that profit from them will doubtless come up with something else as the source of their profits dries up, but I for one can quite happily exist without the use of short text numbers and I'd bet I'm not the only one.

I agree. If it was up to me, then there would be no premium numbers whatsoever. It is obvious that the industry can not regulate itself and it should, therefore, be regulated by legislation.

If people want to buy ring tones, music, jokes etc etc, let them buy them just as you would from Amazon or any other on-line trader. Similarly with those wanting to access !!!!!! numbers on land lines.

The trouble about fining these companies is that the income exceeds the fines and, in any event, those who lose money to them are not compensated by the fines. Now if the networks were fined 10 times as much for every case................................................................. that might stop it.

firstly the fines are taken from revenue that is specifically withheld in order to pay the fines.......in other words the victims have in fact been paying the fines.

In recent years Phonepayplus did start increasing fines and this lead to the profits of companies like Zamano and Tanla falling off the edge of a cliff.
Not because they were losing directly but because their scamming content providers (the patsy) were being driven out of business.
Ofcom have now, because of Industry(AIME/NOC) lobbying, decided to allow the scammers to operate a complaint handling 'refund and apology' practice.
  • I found out that i was involved with similar charges on my mobile. Having searched the info on the net I cam across the company details. I have called them at 08082343605 and asked them to take of my mobile number off their list.
They told me i must have agreed to their terms at some point.
I hope this will be the end of this.
The last time I was lured in to a similar thing:T i complained to the ombudsman and the company was fined £20000. The amount charged was not returned though!!!
I must mention that it was not the same company.
I am grateful for the link here.

This is one of the reasons why you never let a child have unsupervised access to a contract phone.

Losing £40 to £50 is very annoying, but some people have lost many hundreds of £ in this way.

I suspect these scammers target children (and naive adults) and persuade them to reply to their scam texts.

Of course this sort of thing should be banned - no one intends to pay £30 or more for a junk ringtone or whatever.

I've just been billed £39.60 extra on my vodafone contract bill by 60555. Vodafone were very helpful when I used live chat. Gave me the names of companies - Netsize and Opera - who have charged me for texts and purchases. I had no idea who they were and never purchased anything from them.

Then I remebered unsolicited texts from 60555. I had texted "STOP" to them twice and second time they replied saying they would stop. I didn't know I was being charged and have no idea how they got my number. Vodafone said Netsize hadn't stopped charging me.

Called Netsize who say no more texts, but I want a refund. Reported them to phonepayplus today and wrote to Radio 4 You and Yours.

I'm not a child, I'm a pensioner. How can unauthorised payments like these be taken?
