I am going to withdraw from this thread - you cannot hold a reasoned discussion with someone who seems to be incapable of reading and understanding the simplest of statements. I said this:
"The fact that the LO transmits into open space is totally irrelevant, the fact that you ARE picking up this signal and intend to use it elsewhere is relevant."
Just WHERE does this say that "simply picking up a signal" is "illegal" -it says NO such thing ! The word "illegal" is NOT used anywhere - are you reading another thread ??
I am off to talk to the lamp post outside, it will have better comprehension...................0 -
The Law requires that ASDA notify TV Lic if any TV EQUIPMENT is purchased.
A Hi-Fi is NOT TV equipment so they shouldn't be handing out private and confidential information.
Paul
...sorry names and addresses aren't private & confidential info. The T&C's are?...and were agreed to...including the sharing of info. perhaps?0 -

The "by product" signal cannot be used for other purposes, doubly so when the person gathering this signal will not disclose what equipment he is using.
A policeman cannot say in Court, "I know he Murdered Mr Smith" - he has to prove it. Just as TVL cannot say in Court "he was watching without a licence, but we are not going to tell you how we know"
The "proof of the pudding is in the eating" - TVL have never used detector evidence in Court - FACT !
(Read Hansard if you don't believe me ! AND - there is also a statement from the BBC's Legal Office to the same effect - which the Beeb tried to suppress following an FOI Act request)
Given your little tantrum above, it's ironic that you still don't seem to have taken on board that the detector vans were never designed to provide evidence that you could use in court.
The difference is profound. Rather like the difference between using the contents of an illegally tapped telephone conversation versus a police officer acting on information that he obtained whilst standing outside the door of someone planning a robbery on the phone.
The first would not be allowed as evidence and the second would never even be presented as evidence. And if the origin of the information that the officer used to make sure he was in the right place at the right time to apprehend the villains ever came to light it would be irrelevant to any court case. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

I suppose that if you only want a discussion with people who agree with you, that's probably the best decision that you could make.
Don't forget to attempt to insult the lamp post if it does dare to disagree with your opinion though.
By the way Moonrakerz, you've forgotten to post the link to the BBC legal office statement.0 -

You are thinking of DVD recorders. AFAIK there are no DVD players that have a TV tuner built in. They don't even have an RF modulator. But maybe things are different in Africa?0 -
Just buy a black and white tv license. They are £49. It will include listening to radio braodcasts. Unless the 73 year old is prepared for nuisance phone calls and visits, because believe me they will harress her becuase of her age, you'd better nail the door shut.0

Not true.
They just send letters.
I had a friend who lived at 42a A Street - the ground floor flat of a house that had, for over 40 years, been converted into three such flats.
For some reason the TV Licensing people had 42 A Street as a separate entity in addition to 42a, 42b and 42c. The first time they wrote she replied to them. Thereafter they just sent letters every now and again with various levels of treat but - and this is the point - the threats only related to using a TV without a licence, not failing to jump through hoops to satisfy TVL that you didn't need one.
And there is no need for a licence for radio.
And your assertion that they "will harress her becuase of her age" is utter nonsense. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

Ridiculous advice... even if this wasn't MSE and what you were suggesting wasn't a total waste of money...
Why should someone buy something they don't need just so they don't get bullied by these idiots....A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A
If you find my posts useful, "pay it forward" and help someone else out, that's how places like MSE can be so successful.0 -

I was just thinking that a lot of people often use the generic term "DVD player", even when they are refering to recorders.
It was the same when video units were popular.
I was often asked to stick a video in the player, (even though it was a VCR).0 -

My mistake. Radio Licence abolsihed in 1971.
I see your a regular MSE troll. Congratulations. :T0
