Hi
I was with Tiscali for a number of years for broadband and home calls, this was taken over by Talk Talk.
I am now out of contract with them and looking to change suppliers.
I seem to be coming up against a brick wall, everyone I contact says that Talk Talk have taken over the line and it is not compatible with anyone else, I would have to go back to BT. I have contacted BT and they are saying I would have to pay £75 to transfer to them.
Is there anything I can do??? Surely this is not allowed that one company can have a line taken over to prevent you swapping. I have already had a MAC code from talk talk last year but I still could not swap.
Help please.....
Thanks Sue

I'm with Talk Talk and they have a forum which as well as informal is also supported by their staff.Whenever I've had a problem I've posted on there and they've been very helpful.I don't know if they could solve your problem but perhaps they could give you further information.
'Hope you get sorted soon0 -
The issue you are encountering would have been exactly the same as when you were with Tiscali if you had everything through there... ie BB, phone and line rental... the charge is a cost for getting an engineer out to move your line physically back off the LLU network on to the ADSL service at the exchange... sadly BTOpenreach don't do this for free... this btw is not unique to TT or TiscaliDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Is this daft misinformation still going around ("you need to go back to BT")
Any provider can take over the line. They place the order with BT Openreach who then charge a fee for moving a pair of wires to some different equipment in the exchange which then gets passed on to you. Think it's usually about £45 but could be wrong on that.
Thing is, many providers won't take over the line, and will tell you it's not possible. That's not true, they just can't be bothered. This tends to be the "cheap" ones.
If your proposed ISP/line rental provider says no, then you simply need to find one that says yes.0 -
Okay, have decided to switch to Plusnet on a 12month contract so that at least the line goes back to BT. Then I can shop around for cheaper companies after the contract expires.
Actually, happy with price I have got from them. I will be saving approx £8 per month anyway so worth doing.
I had tried Tesco, Orange and various other companies who all said "no" they could not take the line over, so not just cheap companies.
Just waiting for the MAC code now from Talk Talk then I can finalise the switch.0 -
