    You shouldn't have bought PPI

And with that, all sympathy goes out of the window.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

I bought a dress from Lipsy and tried it on at home. Upon trying it on at home I took off the label as it was quite a small dress with a very large label.

I realised I did not think I would wear this dress so I took it back to the shop with the original receipt for a refund. I was not aware that Lipsy operated a 14 day policy, rather than the usual 28 day policy. Even though I was only a couple of days over this date and had the original recipt staff completely dismissed me, even though I explained I just did not know their returns policy was different.

I was not even allowed an exchange of the product, something that I have been able to do in other stores without even the receipt.

I contacted customer service as I was very unhappy with this. The email I received back was barely literate to be honest, and just said they would stick with the decision made in store.

I am very unhappy as I have never heard of a store operating such a strict 14 day only policy, and refusing to do anything with a new unworn item with original receipt.

I am now stuck with this dress I will never wear.

    What should I do?

    Thank you

I think you'll find that even those shops who do (over and above your statutory rights) offer a refund within a certain timescale just because you change your mind would bauk at accepting a dress back that has had the label removed.

You'll find phrases such as "in its original condition", "product as sold" or "saleable condition" on receipts.

    What terminology do Lipsy use?

A garment with a label cut out can't just be put back on the rack or shelf.

I think you've been pretty rude here, you've had an answer to your question - you just didn't like it!

    What should you do?
    • Learn from your mistake
    • Check out the return/refund policy from the shop you are buying from (don't rely on what other stores do)
    • Never ever cut out labels or cut off tags unless you are 100% sure you are going to keep the item
    • Finally, take wealdroam's advice:

I've re-read this and I think you mean you actually cut off the label (as opposed to merely removing the price tag).

    1. Shops don't have to refund or replace unwanted goods simply because you've changed your mind.
    2. Many shops do, out of goodwill, allow a period in which to return unwanted goods. They can stipulate the period, plus the rules under which they'll accept returned goods.
    3. No shop, regardless of how generous its return policy is, will accept goods that have had a bit cut off.

    Crikey.

Or alternatively... stop damaging clothes and expecting shops to give you your wedge back.

I read it as she cut the label out (i.e. the one that said 'Lipsy' or whatever) rather than she'd cut the price tags off.

I'm not sure what she DID cut off.

Isn't it strange that you can read the same words and come up with a different view of what is actually meant. ;)

Indeed. It's about context and I guess I was just surprised to read that someone cut the label out of something but still thought they could get their money back! So I assumed I'd read it wrong. I think it was the label though because of the comment about it being a small dress (i.e. the label would show).

Although I agree that you would have been better off trying it on in the store, I do have sympathy. I understand how you feel because I have had this happen to me. I was in a store once with a friend and we were on our way out and I noticed a top, so I quickly took it to the til and bought it, I didn't try it on as my friend was rushing me. I got home later and tried it on and cut the label out, I cut off the label because I was confident the top would be fine on as it was a size 8 which is my size... It looked horrible on and I really loved it on the hanger but not on myself. I went back to the store and they refused to refund as I'd cut the label out. From then on I've ALWAYS tried things on in stores!

As for advice goes, I'd flog it on ebay. You never know, you might get a nice little profit... And at least you won't have a dress that you'll never wear gathering dust in your wardrobe!

    Good luck :)

I don't really have any sympathy with the OP.

You should always check what the specific store policy is about returns/refunds.

I can't understand how you could try a top on, cut the label out then decide it looked horrible on you.

I never cut tags off anything until I'm 100% sure I'm going to keep it.
Even if it means trying the garment on half a dozen times over several days with different shoes etc.

If you try something on in store, do you cut the label out first?
The problem is the missing label.
If it had been intact then I think with a bit of asking nicely and a bit of goodwill you could probably have got an exchange.

Imagine you buy a packet of salt and vinegar crisps from a corner shop. You realise you wanted cheese and onion. "Is it ok if I swap these?" Chances are you'll get a yes. They'll just put the salt and vinegar ones back on the shelf and let you take cheese and onion.
Now, imagine you bought a packet of salt and vinegar crisps from a corner shop. You open the packet and realise you wanted cheese and onion. What chances do you think you've got of swapping them? Not many!
