Why not spend a little extra and buy a brand name you've heard of?

Correct me if I am wrong, but the Technosonic from Woolies is a rebranded Ferguson, ie, it's a brand name with a sticker on the remote! Names aren't everything :)

I assume this TV has got a built in Digital Tuner?

Have all new TVs a digital tuner or is this a risky assumption?
  • If you call Argos for availability they arent so up-to-date as you think, I wanted to buy a popular mobile phone and checked to see if they had it in all of the stores in the SouthEast. They all said sold out... went to my local store the same day and they had 15 in stock.

I thought it was a rebadged Thomson?

The Teco's that are going around apparently are rebadged Viewsonics.

Even so, i'd still rather go for a premium branded TV myself.

No - old fashioned analogue. There again, that's all I can get here in East Yorks.

Just my opinion, here folks. but.....

Is it really worth going for Cheapo's when cheap still means a hell of a lot of money?

This is furniture, Has got to display what you are watching, well, and needs to have excellent sound quality - otherwise you will be very unsatisfied with your purchase.

    Or am I wrong?

Cheap usually means 'CHEAP QUALITY' doesn't it? And two sets at £399.00 in ten years costs more than one that'll last ten years, so is it Money Saving?

I'll second that all the way.

I can't believe that people are so desparate to get on the LCD TV bandwagon that they'd fork out good money on cheapo brands.

Despite what some buyers say about these cheap brands, none of them have had good reviews in professional tests and even a lot of the premium brands don't do that well in them.

You really have to pay a bit more for quality.

    A very risky assumption.

Generally, all TVs only have analogue tuners - unless they say otherwise (DVB or DTT are possible abbreviations for digital tuners but 'Freeview' is a better indicator).

Another way to tell is if the specification says, Nicam stereo and/or Fastext, it's an analogue set - because both of those are analogue facilities not availabkle on digital.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I want to buy a top TV when I move house in the summer. Is it worth getting this one now and keeping it til then, or wait until the summer when prices might have dropped further?

Almost all if not all TV's that have digital/ Freeview/ DVB tuners will have Nicam and Fastext for the simple reason that they still have both an analogue and a digital tuner.

Personally I think having a digtal tuner is more important then having HD.
Analogue will begin to be phased out from 2008 until 2012 depending on region.
Then you will either have to buy a Digital STB or get a new TV.
(see here for details about the digital switchover: http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/ )

HD is something the braodcasters are thinking about but havn't set a date for yet.
If I'm right the only HD services in the UK is Sky+ and Telewest and for those of you who have a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD DVD players (very expensive) you can watch those new type DVDs at HD resolution.

Anyway the main thing that people don't seem to realise is that if the BBC and rest of the broadcasters go HD it will be on digital anyway, so HD or no HD digital is the next upgrade thas happening.
