Tesco Clubcard Plus

I think I may have put this in the wrong place, but not sure.

On 1st December, Tesco take a dd out of my bank for £160 (my month's groceries). I trundle in on 1st December at about 8pm and am told my card is refused, so had to pay with my normal cash card.

Customer Services said that the money probably hadn't cleared yet.

Luckily I had money in my other account to pay for my £115 worth of shopping. But if I didn't, and had three or four kids to feed, I'd be up **** creek!

I would have no money in my normal account (as Tesco took it), but also no money on my Clubcard to buy food!!

I'm not very good at confrontation and am more concerned about my extra points than the money issue at the moment, but should I ring up and complain? Or was I silly to try and use the card so soon?

I'm guessing 115 points at double value is 330 which equates to £13.20 in real money.

  • Perhaps this is a case of the delay in banking where it exits one account but is not clear credited into recipients bank? I know that I use to arrange for payroll to get paid CHAPS into employees accounts - those with certain banks (such as myself) had to wait up to five days for it to reach my account whereas those with same bank as company got it same day.

I can accept that this probably is the case, but my point is that this doesn't help someone who doesn't have a lot of money.

The money was nowhere at that point in time, but I still needed to buy food.

EDIT: And now I've unfairly missed out on all those points and have too much money on my Clubcard Plus!

There's no need to be confrontational over this though - just ring them up and explain your problem and ask them if they can help you.

Confrontation only comes up if they can't :)

With my board guide hat on I'm not quite sure which board would best help you out here. I'll have a think...

Thanks guys. Think I'll give them a ring when the boss goes out. Fairly sure they need some funny pin number thing which I don't know if I can find! Sure it's as home somewhere though.

I'll try not to get mad and stuttery, just state my case and hopefully get my points back.

My money hits my clubcard plus account the same day as it leaves my bank (abbey). I have gone back through my statements and the only time it differs is when the 2nd falls at the weekend.

OP- I would have expected the money to be there by 8.00 p.m. I didn't think you had to wait until the end of the day for the system to update but that may be what they tell you. Have you tried shopping on the 1st before when you were relying solely on that month's money? I am able to keep a float in my account (I got caught out once myself) so haven't come across this problem myself.
  • If you still have your reciept take it to customer services and they will put your points on for you. I do it all the time!

Well I just rang up (took her a while to understand what I was trying to tell her), and got 200 points instead of the 114 I was moaning about!! Wahey! It does work. Am I right in thinking these 200 points will be worth £8 in vouchers?? Saving up for something rather than spending instore.

Usually we walk in on 1st of the month and whack £100 on in cash to cover petrol, so running out of money wasn't a problem. On Friday we didn't bother for no reason in particular. I was going to up my dd to cover petrol as well, but don't think I'll bother now.

I've reduced my dd and will just put cash on in future.

The lady did say that it took time to clear which is a bit of a bummer.

Re: pbradley's post. The lady on the phone said "Why didn't you go customer services?" I said "I did. They handed me their phone and said to ring you!" I didn't particular feel like doing that in the middle of the store, so didn't ring up.

She eventually worked out that they wouldn't have been able to put the points on anyway. I had already used my Tesco Clubcard to get points, but wanted my double points by paying for my shopping using my Tesco Clubcard Plus (which apparently is different company), but because I had paid on my normal bankcard, they wouldn't have been able to do this.
